Mother: Sarah Jane "Sally" BRADFORD |
NICHOLAS SUMMERS PERKINS, JR. AKA FRANKLIN SPENCER Grandma
Elben's brother Nicholas killed a man and changed his name to
Spencer. I believe he lived in Aurora, a small settlement a few
miles from Salina. An old lady who was also called Aunt Chloe
Spencer was related in some way to Grandma, (Eliza Mary Perkins)
possibly a sister-in-law.
(Laurel Elben notes). This brother was born Nicholas Perkins. By
age 19 he was teaching school, and before the Civil War broke
out, he was pursuing a career as a lawyer. He was pro-South, and
joined the Confederate forces, quickly rising to the rank of
Lieutenant Colonel, serving with the 11th Holmans, Tennessee
Cavalry.
He was accused of being involved with the burning (blowing up)
of a railway bridge, killing and injuring many Union soldiers.
He was forced to leave his home area (Missouri) and head west.
He moved to Pueblo, Colorado and bought a 300 acre parcel of
land near the Arkansas River. Three of his sisters, possibly
Margaret Henry, Elizabeth Stroube, and Maria Bryan, were already
living there, probably following Brigham Young to the area. News
of his Confederate past followed quickly, and he was confronted
by a group of 10 or 12 men lead by J. H. Russell. In the ensuing
fight, Nicholas, in defense of his life, stabbed Russell, and he
died three days later.
Nicholas was on the run again, married Sarah Jane Dodds at
Cherry Creek, Colorado on June 9, 1864. On their way to make a
new home in Oregon, Sarah became ill in Ogden, Utah, and it was
here that he decided to change his name to Franklin Spencer and
settle down in Manti, Utah. Here he developed a successful
teamster business supplying gold and silver mines. He became
totally committed to the Mormon church and in 1874 was asked to
become Bishop of Salina, Utah. This led to his becoming a member
of the Utah State Legislature. In the 1880's, due to the
persecution of polygamy by Mormons, Franklin moved to Juarez,
Chihuahua, Mexico and lived there until his death in 1915.
In 1878, Franklin Spencer re-baptized his sister, Eliza Mary
Perkins Elben, her husband John Elben, and their son, William
Ernest Elben, into the Mormon Church. Helen Elben remembers
Franklin Spencer as a severe stutterer when talking, but with an
excellent voice without stuttering while singing. She mimicked
his stuttering and had a hard time breaking that habit. Aunt
Chloe, was Chloe Celestia Durfee Spencer, Franklin's third wife.
The story of Nicholas Summers Perkins, Jr. (Franklin Spencer) is
of more than usual interest. Nicholas' mother was born Sarah
Jane Bradford. Her parents, William and Elizabeth Bradford,
evidently thought so highly of Nicholas Summers Perkins, that
they named their last son after him, too, and the use of the
name Nicholas carried down for many years.
The Perkins family fortunes seem to have taken a turn in the
wrong direction with the passing of Sarah Jane Bradford Perkins
in 1841.
From all indications, Nicholas Sr. went to Missouri with his
brother-in-law, Thomas Thoroughman, in the mid-1840's, taking
his children with him. They located in Buchanan County near St.
Joseph and it was from there that Nicholas Sr. was drawn to
leave his family in hopes of striking it rich in the newly
discovered gold fields. Sometime near 1849 or 1850, Nicholas
Perkins, Sr. seems to have been drawn to the Gold Rush
excitement in California.. There is not much known about him,
other than that he died in Stockton, California in 1850. His
sister, Emily Thoroughman, took over responsibility for raising
Nicholas, Jr. and the others that were left behind.
Nicholas Perkins, Jr. was born in 1836 in Bracken County,
Kentucky. His mother died in 1841 shortly after the birth of his
sister, Eliza Mary Perkins. At the time of his father's quest
for instant wealth, he would have been about 13 or 14.
