In the Early Book of Trinity Parish (Register of Births, Marriages and Deaths, 1729-1797), Charles County -- St. Mary's County, Maryland, a notation appears that Walter Briscoe and Elizabeth Compton were "united in The Holy State of Matrimony, May 13, 1762."

1850 DeKalb Co. AL Census;
Constable in Rhea Co. TN and served on many jurys in the early 1820's. 1823 on Rhea Co. Tax Records. Listed as a resident of Marion Co., TN in the late 1820's.


He is found in the 1830 Census in Bledsole Co. and the 1840 Census in Hamilton Co. with occupation as "cotton farmer".


Had mail route contract in Chatooga Co GA from 1 Jul 1844 to 1 Jul 1847. He gave power of attorney to Thomas Berry 11 Oct 1846 to complete the contract. It is thought this is when he moved to AL.


In the 1850 Census he is in DeKalb Co., Al with his new wife Rhoda and occupation is listed as a "Hatter". In the 1860 DeKalb Co. Census his occupation is "Jailer".


Per letter dated Feb 9 1914 from Peter J. Rice to a relative in TX states: "Joseph and his brother William were raised as orphans. Their parents were Daniel and Julia Rice. The family was Scott/Irish and that his(Peter's) greatgrandfather(Daniel's Father) came from Wales. There were 8 sons. Two went to NY, 2 went to VA, 2 went to SC and 2 went to TN." We don't know whether the 8 sons are Daniel's brothers or uncles.


Per letter dated May 25, 1914 from Peter J. Rice to a relative Joseph died in Logan Co. AR.in 1874 , Visit to Logan Co. by Joyce Rice Norton found Joseph not listed on any cemetery records so could not verify where buried.
