Subject: MD-KY-OH?
1. James SARGENT Sr. m. Eleanor TAYLOR: he "came to Frederick
County MD from Snow Hill England before 1735." (Clermont & Brown
Counties [Ohio], W.P.A, n.d., p.166)
2. James SARGENT Jr. m. Philena Pigman in 1733 in MD : "In 1796
they immigrated to Kentucky, and having purchased a large tract
of land in the southwestern part of Franklin and southeastern
part of Washington on the Bear Creek, he made his home there two
years later. (Everts, Louis; History of Clermont County, Ohio,
n.d., p.336.)
3. Mary SARGENT, dau. of James & Eleanor, m. Benjamin PENN:
"In 1808 Benjamin and Mary Sargent Penn moved to Clermont County
[Ohio] with their children. Also with them in the move: James
and Snowden SARGENT, John Prather and Matthew Pigman, father of
Philena. (Clermont and Brown Counties, p.66)
3. Sally SARGENT, dau. of James Jr. and Philena Pigman, m.
Samuel M. WALRAVEN abt. 1799: "They settled north of her
father, James SARGENT, on a farm overlooking Bear Creek."
(History of Clermont County Ohio, p.336.)
Questions: There is only one mention of KY, and nowhere is a
date given for a later move to OH. All the census, birth,
marriage & cemetery records we have found place these SARGENTS
in OH. There are Franklin and Washington counties in both KY
and OH. Was there a migration route from MD>KY>OH, or did the
author or narrator just make a mistake when he placed their
first move to KY? Were the Franklin and Washington he mentioned
townships rather than counties? Does ANYONE know the location
of Bear Creek?
Both of these books rely heavily upon narrative oral history
from "old settlers" but in the absence of other sources, we have
had to use them for information. Help! Virginia.
Wonder if you know who this is:
