VII. Clement((3)) Reade, founder of the Lunenberg family.
Old Churches Ministers, and Families of Virginia. Article XLVIII.

"Colonel Clement Read (so often mentioned as the active vestryman in Brunswick and Lunenburg) was born in the year 1707. He was a trustee of William and Mary College in 1729. Being President of the Council at the departure of Governor Gooch for England, in 1749, he became Governor of the Colony, but died a few days after. He had been educated at William and Mary under Commissary Blair. He married the daughter of William Hill, an officer in the British navy and second son of the Marquis of Lansdowne. Mr. Read, having, with Colonel Richard Randolph, of Curls, purchased large tracts of land in what was then Lunenburg, moved to that county and was clerk of the same for many years. He frequently served in the House of Burgesses with the great leaders of the Revolution. He died in the year 1763 and was buried at Bushy Forest. His wife was laid by his side in 1780. She was (says Mr. Foote) a pious woman and an exemplary member of the Episcopal Church. Their eldest son, Colonel Isaac Read, married a daughter of Henry Embra, (another vestryman of the Lunenburg Church,) who represented the county with his father, Clement Read. He himself represented the county with Paul Carrington, who married one of his sisters. They were both associated with Washington, Jefferson, and Henry in their patriotic movements. Paul Carrington was a zealous friend of the Episcopal Church. What were the partialities of Mr. Isaac Read, whether he followed in the footsteps of his father or not, we are unable to say. He was made colonel in a Virginia regiment, and soon after died, being laid with military honours in a vault in Philadelphia. He left a son by the name of Clement, who became a distinguished minister of the Presbyterian Church, after having for a time officiated among the Methodists. He married a descendant of Pocahontas,--a Miss Edmonds, of Brunswick,--by whom he had thirteen children."

From "Old Churches, Ministers and Families of Virginia" by Bishop William Meade in Two Volumes, 1995, Vol 2: Colonel Clement Read (so often mentioned as the active vestryman in Brunswick and Lunenburg) was born in the year 1707. John Robinson or "President" Robinson was his guardian and superintended his education at William and Mary. Clement Read was a trustee of William and Mary College in 1729. He had been educated at William and Mary under Commissary Blair. Clement Read married Mary Hill in 1730, the daughter of William Hill, an officer in the British navy and second son of the Marquis of Lansdowne/Downshire (?) by his wife Priscilla Jenings, daughter of Gov. Edmund Jenings of Virginia (the records of King and Queen County having been destroyed, therefore the parentage of Col. Clement Read or of his wife has not been verified).

Mr. Read, having, with Col. Richard Randolph, of Curls, purchased large tracts of land in what was then Lunenburg, moved to that county and was clerk of the same for many years. He frequently served in the House of Burgesses with the great leaders of the Revolution. He died 2 January 1763 and was buried at Bushy Forest [in the present county of Charlotte, formed a year after his death]. His wife was laid by his side in 1780. [Mrs. Mary Hill Read died 11 Nov 1780, age 69].

"Vol 1:483 Footnote: "Clement Read was one of the most influential men in Lunenburg, as that county originally was laid out. He was the first clerk of the court, having been appointed in 1745 and became the head of a numerous family. His son Isaac was the lieutenant-colonel of the 4th Virginia Regiment and died in the service in Philadelphia..."

Lunenburg Co, Va Will Bk 1: Colo. Clement Read abstracts:
Page 199. Account Current of the estate of Mr. James Cocke, deceased. [Entries are in chronological order from Dec 18, 1754 to Aug 3, 1757] - Bartholomew Dupuy going to Amelia Court and his expenses to Lunenburg Court to carry the inventory of the estate at Malvern Hills to be recorded there, and his expense to Prince Edward Court to see Colo Clement Read and his expense at the sale of the old iron to the crier."

The Reads and Their Relatives by Alice Read (just posted by the FTM library).
Three of John Nash's children married three of Clement Read's children. These children were all born in the 1730-1740 era. The Read/Nashes married at least three times to Barksdales (both in VA and TN).

One (Laura Caroline Read, b 1820) married the General's brother, Harrison Barksdale. Another Read (Polly Hill Read, b abt 1795, prob in VA) married a Randolph Barksdale. A third (John Nash Read) married Mary Barksdale in VA or TN. John Nash Read died in Rutherford County, TN after 1826. Mary was his third wife and together they had 10 children.
