Notes

According to BIO in Livingston Parish, LA, 1982 - Rev Johnnie B. Higginbotham and Charity had 11 children, all born between 1827 and 1851. He founded the Gilead Methodist Church in E. Feliciana Parish, 6th Ward and was the pastor for many years.

Rev. John Brown Higginbotham died 1 Jan. 1879 (Father of Ira Monroe Higginbotham) born 20 Aug. 1837.

Rev. Johnnie moved to E. Feliciana Parish when he was about 10 years old.

Page 22: Book "C" folios 205-207, dated 11 Oct 1832. Children listed in Higginbotham, by Mabel LaBiche, pub. 1996 on p. 22 are prob. in error. Thomas Preston, James, William, Seib, Frances, and Zeke.

per EMail 26 Aug 1997 - "None of those listed by Mable LaBiche, are the children of John B. and Charity (Carroll) Higginbotham".

In 1855, John B. wrote to his mother, Mary Powers, in Lafayette Co. MS. A large collection of original letters and other family documents existed in 1970 in the possession of Mrs. Irene Shipp (now deceased) of Rome, MS.

"September 8, 1855 - Dear mother, I thought you would like to hear of our temporal prosperity. Charity, thank God, has good health once more and is looking forward to the first November, the thirteenth son or daughter. We have twenty-eight in our family - fourteen whites, and fourteen blacks. I have four grown sons at home, all single, and three younger ones. They are all in the church. I have two little girls, Lewiza and Elizabeth. Mary Anne was married three years ago last May 5th. Her husband is a traveling Methodist preacher of the Mississippi Conference. His name is Christopher R. Godfrey. his circuit is not far from Natchez. He has two children, Mary Charity and John Banks."

Has personally researched this family including census records, numerous correspondence with descendants, and official records of E. Feliciana Parish. With the two exceptions Flynn and Thomas William, these children have been identified. Relatives have named Thomas William & Flynn but no trace of them on census or other records. Perhaps they are in the Gilead Church Cemetery.
