Father: JOHN de HEREFORD Lord of Sufton, Knt.
Mother: Matilda

Family 1 : Isabel HELTON
  1. +ROGER de HEREFORD of Sufton
  2. +JOHN HEREFORD of Bodenham

Notes

"Nicholas de Hereford third son of John de Hereford of Sufton Court and Mordiford, Herefordshire England was born when his father was 58 years of age. According to the book "England in the Age of Wycliffe" by George Macaulay Trevelyn, published by Longmans, Green, and Co in 1900 Nicholas de Hereford became a Roman Catholic priest and received a Doctor of Divinity degree from Queen's College at Oxford. He later served as the Treasurer of Hereford Cathedral. An excerpt from the book states "Nicholas de Hereford, born in 1330, his father being already old, twenty-six years after his eldest brother Henry, and nine years after his brother John married a very young woman, Isabel Helton and had two children, Roger and John. After the decease of his wife, Isabel, he took orders of the church. After later studies he receive d his D. D. and became a Professor of Divinity, and of the Society of Queen's College at Oxford. In 1381, Nicholas Hereford and Philip Repingdone, Prebendary of Leicester, Chancellour of the University of Oxford, and Bishop of Lincoln were accused of heresie, with many other divines of Oxford University, for favouring and keeping up Wycliffe's doctrine and the translation of the Holy Bible into English. Nicholas and others were taken by the Black Friars and transported to Rome for a hearing before the Pope. This affair caused considerable agitation among the clergy. There is a Protestation of Innocence and Submission to the Church, upon vellum, from Hereford and Repingdone, preserved in the Bodleian Library in Oxford. Mr. Nicholas (as he was styled) obtained a protection from the Crown against his accusers. King Henry IV granted, by charter, "to our beloved subject, Mr. Nicholas Hereford, treasurer of the Cathedral Church of Hereford, a vessel of wine, to receive every year for his life, upon our prize, in our town of Bristol, from the hands of our First Cupbearer, or his deputy." His friend, Repingdon, was also much in favour, being promoted to a bishoprick and a cardinal's hat." Nicholas' work on the translation of the Bible is on display in the Hereford Cathedral in Hereford, England. It is known as the Cider Bible."

"After the death of his wife, he was educated for the priesthood and graduated at Queen's College, Oxford, wit a Doctor of Divinity. During the time that Nicholas's brother was operating Sufton Estate he was becoming involved with a man named John Wyclif who had a major part in the translation of the Bible from latin to English. In 1377, Wyclif proclaimed that the Bible was the sole written autority that should govern the thoughts and actions of man and that neither tradition nor the Roman Catholic church should govern the conscience of a person. Since the Bible was written in Latin it was impossible for the common man to know the scriptures. Wyclif then commissioned Nicholas de Hereford to translate the Bible into English. It was during the reign of King Richard II, that John Wyclif, and his followers including Nicholas de Hereford began writing papers and preaching causing great revolt among the peasants. The Church and the Blackfriars responded with the declaration that the principles set fourth by Wyclif were blasphemies. After preaching publicly the first Sunday of Lent, 23 Feb 1382, the Blackfriars implored the Duke to rid them of their chief enemy, Nicholas Hereford. Nicholas and his friends made a circuit preaching to as many churches as possible and by 15 May 1382, he was back in Oxford preaching a daring sermon in English. Nicholas and his friends were arrested and placed in prison by the Blackfriars who sought to have them excommunicated, to wich they immediately filed an appeal to the Pope in Rome. A diligent serch was made for Nicholas, but on 25 July 1382 the Blackfriars reported that he was nowhere to be found. He had in fact slipped out of the country. Nicholas was involved with a continuing conflict with the Blackfriars and the Roman Catholic Church until 1390 when his friends at Oxford and his friends at King Richards court convinced him to recant his heresy to avoid perpetual imprisonment at St. Albans. He received the protection of the crown and was restored to his office as Treasurer of Hereford Cathedral. King Henry IV ordered that he be given a vessel of wine each year for life from the royal stores in the town of Bristol from the Hands of our cupbearer or his deputy. Nicholas was succeeded at Sufton by his son Roger de Hereford and Nicholas spent his final years in the Charterhouse of St. Anne at Coventry."
