16-2. Thomas, Gov. of Alabama, b. 1784 in Prince Edward Co., Va.; d. Dec. 24, 1840 in Alabama; was President of the first State Senate of Alabama and consequently at the death of his brother, Hon. William Wyatt, became Governor, which office he filled with distinction, until a successor was elected and inaugurated in 1821. It was during his term as Governor that Alabama cast her first electoral vote, and he started the new government at the new capital, Cahaba. He was also a member of the first Constitutional Convention and was considered he greatest financier in the Southwest of his day and generation. He and Astor were the wealthiest men in the United States at that time; he was a liberal Churchman; m. Parmilie Thompson, and had issue-one son and one daughter.
