Notes

Letter from Marcella Pickerel Headrick, dated 22 Jul 1992 to Robert Alvis excerpts: "Sarah Alvis married Thomas Pickerel instead of Solomon. My father pronounced Alvis with n "O" (Olvis). In the 1850 census of Monroe Co. KY Thomas Pickerel listed with wife Sarah and 5 children. He was 66 and she was 45. Also listed was a William Pickerel, age 65, and wife Eunice, age 41 and in their household was a Harris ALVIS, age 90, blind, and a Rose Ann Alvis, 30.

On the same page of the census is Henry Pickerel 30, and his wife Martha Wilson, 23. He has 3 children listed, later he had 5 more, one of them my grandfather. My father remembers his grandfather Henry, telling him about coming over the mountains from Pittsylvania Co. VA with his father Thomas Pickerel, Sr and his stepmother, Sarah Alvis. I say stepmother, because we don't know if she was his mother or not,. We have conflicting stories. Thomas had been married before and had children that he left behind in VA.

In the census in Pittsylvania Co. VA there is a Henry Alvis, about 3, living in the household of one Harris Alvis. now I don't know if that was my Henry or not. Henry was about 9 years old when they came to Kentucky about 1830 and 1840s.

Henry and William Alvis both served in the Civil War-Union. There are conflicting records in the 1850 census and Monroe Co. KY cemetery records, the census lists the wife of Wm. Alvis as being a Nancy. The cemetery record says that William Alvis wife's name was Sarah, and there is a Nancy Alvis buried in the old cemetery - I guess the last one buried there was about 1890. If Sarah Alvis was his mother or step-mother, Henry had several brothers and sisters. I don't know where any of them went, except one.

Thomas Jr. had several children and he went to MO., but separated and came back to Monroe Co. KY - I found him as a witness in some marriage records in 1895. In 1979 I went to MO doing some research on my mother's people and just happened to run upon some Pickerels in Montgomery Co. MO I found some descendants of Thomas, Sr. and Sarah Alvis. I think they originally went to Jerseyville and White Hall, Illinois, just across the Missouri River from Missouri. Some of them are still there."

"4.Thomas Pickerel, b. in 1784, first m. Sally Dalton 24 Dec. 1805. Thomas later m. Sally Alvis 25 Sept. 1826 Had a total of nine (9) children. In 1833 Thomas and his family immigrated to Ky and never returned to Va. #4 is my ancestor. Pickerel has been spelled many ways. My father in his request for a marriage license spelled it Pickerl. So I don't think the spelling is all that important."
