On 21 April 1676 Richard Gregory (and Thomas Wheeler witnessed
the Will of Robert Bishop.
On 14 Feb. 1679/80 Richard Gregory deed 250 acres to William
Stone in Old Rappahannock Co., VA. On 15 January 1699 William
Stone and Sarah, his wife, deeded 250 acres to Francis
Meriwether in Farnham Parish, Essex Co., VA, on Hoskins Creeke,
adjacent to John Moodey, Thomas Wheeler, and Mary Gregory. The
deed mentions that Richard Gregory of Rappahannock Co., VA,
formerly deeded this property to William Stone on 14 February
1679/80 (acknowledged in court in Rappahannock Co., VA on 7
April 1680). This deed establishes that Richard Gregory was
born prior to 1659 to be the owner of this property when he sold
it in 1679/80.
One 20 April 1682 Frances Gower patent 420 acres in Old
Rappahannock Co., VA adjacent to Richard Gregory’s land and
Richard Gregory’s landing and Thomas Gaines’ land (140 acres of
which was formerly patented to James Williamson on 14 November
1653) [Patent Book 7, Page 125]
On 20 April 1684 Richard Gregory was an adjacent landowner to a
land patent to James and John Baughan. Other adjacent owners
were Thomas Gaines, Henry Awbrey, James Fullerton and Price &
Ball. [Patent Book 7, Page 379]. He continued to be an
adjacent land owner when the same land was repatented by Thomas
Wood, John Wood and Thomas Wood, Jr., on 20 April 1694 [Patent
Book 8, Page 361]
On 20 April 1687 Richard Gregory received a land patent of 850
acres in New Kent Co., VA, on the North side of the Mattapony
River, adjacent to Mr. Watkins and Richard Davis, formerly
granted to Phillip Watkins & William Rickets on 6 March 1673/74
and afterwards granted to Joshua Story on 26 April 1680 and
deserted (Patent Book 7, page 604).
Note: Richard Gregory, William Wyatt, Roger Mallory, Richard
Johnson, William Leigh and Joshua Story were Justices in King &
Queen Co., VA in 1693. [Source: Virginia Colonial Records,
Vol. II, page __ (in Essex Co., VA records)]
On 21 October 1687 Richard Gregory was an adjacent land owner to
the 744 acres that was patented by James Taylor in Old
Rappahannock Co., VA. [Patent Book 7, Page 625]
On 20 October 1691 Richard Gregory patented 50 acres in Old
Rappahannock Co., VA adjacent to his own land and Robert
Halsey’s land and Robert Young’s land. [Patent Book 8, Page
210]
On 27 February 1700/01 Richard Grigory wrote his Will, proved in
Essex Co., VA, on 20 May 1701, in which he described himself of
Farnham Parish in Essex County, VA. He mentions his eldest son,
Richard Grigory, his daughter Elizabeth Grigory (land adjacent
to Robert Halsey), son John Grigory 300 acres being part of 1000
acres formerly patented by Thomas Gaines, daughter Sarah Grigory
700 acres lying upon the head of Mattapony River adjacent to
land of Capt. James Taylor and Mr. Jonathan Fisher and his two
sons-in-law Thomas and William Borne 150 acres at the upper end
of the land given to Sarah Grigory. He mentions personal
property in King & Queen Co., VA. He said that his son John was
to be of age at 18. He mentions his wife, Katherine Grigory and
appoints her his sole executrix.
Note: Sarah Gregory’s 700 acres and Thomas & William Borne’s
150 acres combine to equal the 850 acres which Richard patented
in New Kent Co., VA in 1687 (see d above) and which fell into
King & Queen Co., VA, when that County was cut out of New Kent
Co., VA in 1691. Also, some evidence of Richard’s age comes
from the fact that his son John was not yet age 18 when Richard
wrote his will in February 1700/01.
On 29 April 1693, JAMES TAYLOR, Joshua Storey and Jonathan
Fisher received a land patent of 9150 acres in King & Queen Co.,
VA on the North side of the Mattapony River, actually on the
Mattapony River, adjacent to Joshua Storey, low sunken ground
and head of a branch Morocosick Creek (Patent Book 8, page 268).
This land was almost certainly adjacent to the 850 acres which
Richard Gregory previously patented in 1687 and which Col. James
Taylor, son of James Taylor, Sr., inherited at the death of
James Taylor, Sr., in 1698.
Note: Katherine Snead must have been Katherine Gregory, widow
of Richard Gregory and sole executrix of his estate, who had
remarried Thomas Snead by 10 November 1702. [Source: Virginia
Colonial Abstracts, by Fleet, Vol. II, page __]
William Seemore - Bates traded on behalf of Starke and Arnold.
Paid for the land out of their stock. Believes the land is now
in the hands of Roland Thomas who married the widow of James
Taylor. Taylor, an attorney of Bates, was left in charge of the
land when Bates went to England.

State Library website]."
On 8 Oct 1680 Richard Gregory, brother and heir of John Gregory,
deeded _?_ to his sister, Elizabeth Wheeler.

I know of *no* documentary evidence for the assertion that the
names of Moses HIGGINBOTHAM's parents were John HIGGINBOTHAM and
Frances RILEY. That assertion is based purely on family lore.
Futhermore, I believe the Barbados link has been discredited by
the finding that John HIGGINBOTHAM, son of Charles HIGGINBOTHAM
of Barbados, did *not* marry a Frances RILEY and move to
Virginia, but instead remained in Barbados where he married
Susanna WALKER on 5 April 1717 and raised a family.
For more detail than you could possibly want on the theories
surrounding the origins of the Virginia HIGGINBOTHAM Family you
can read three of my old 1996 posts to the HIGGINBOTHAM-L
mailing list. Below are links to the archived posts.
