to be found in the Archives.

1. JOHN2 HOWELL, CAPTAIN (MISTER1)1 died Bef. 05 February 1761
in Bertie
County, North Carolina. He married JANE1. She died Aft. April
1761 in Probably Bertie County, where in April 1761 she was
confirmed as Executrix of her husbands' estate.
Copy of Will of Captain John Howell, Bertie County, North
Carolina
In the name of God Amen I JOHN HOWELL of Bertie County in the
province aforesaid being I thank God of sound and perfect memory
and calling to mind the frailty of all mankind that as we were
bornh the time of our death is to us unknown _______________doe
therefore make and ordain this my present and Last Will and
testament that to say.
1st First and immediatly I recommend my Soul to almighty God who
gave it and my body to be decently intered as my executors
herein after named and appointed shall think fitting.
2. Secondly as touching such worldly goods and Estate as I am
possessed of my Will and desire is that all my just debts and
funeral charges immediately paid and discharged.
3. Thirdly I give and bequeath unto my loving wife JANE during
her natural life all my personal Estate one copper still and
_______ plantation whereon I now live situate and luing in
Bertie County on Chowan River by estimation Three hundred and
forty acres also the plantation joining to me purchased from
EDWARD BRYAN containing four hundred and four acres also the
plantation joining the said mentioned lately purchased from JOHN
WESTON, MALACHI WESTON and KATHERINE WESTON containing by
estimation Two hundered acres of land during the Term of her
natural life or untill she may see cause to Reliquish the said
Lands unto the persons to whome I have hereafter bequeathed and
devised them.
4th. Fourthly I give Bequeath and devise unto MOURNING HOWELL
McGLAUGHON a
Girl aged about Ten years old Daughter of ELIZABETH aforesaid
intermarried with WILLIAM FLEETWOOD of said County all that
tract _____plantation whereon I now life containing thyree
hundred and forty acres also a Tract and plantation joining me I
purchased of EDWARD BRYAN containing four hundred and four acres
also a Tract of plantation ________ purchased of JOHN WESTON,
MALACHI WESTON and KATHERINE WESTON containing by estimation two
hundred acres of land to be put [?] in __________ after my wifes
decease to her and her heirs and assigns forever but in Case she
dies and without issue before my loving wife Jane then my Will
and intention is that the said Tract of land and plantation be
given as here after mentioned.
5th. Fifthly I give and bequeath unto MOURNING HOWELL McGLAUGHAN
after my
wife JANE Decease if-- the said MOURNING is then living two
negroes one named TAFFEY a man the other named MARIA a girl also
my personal Estate after my wife JANES' decease she paying the
following legacies.
6th. Sixthly My will is and I do devise that MOURNING HOWELL
McGLAUGHAN after my wife JANES decease do pay out of my Estate
unto THOMAS BRYAN son of EDWARD BRYAN the sum of Twelve pounds
______ tion money for a Legacie. I give and bequeath to him also
Ten pounds like money unto THOMAS WHITMELL son of THOMAS
WHITMELL for a legacie. I give and bequeath to him also Ten
pounds like money unto JOHN FLEETWOOD son of WILLIAM FLEETWOOD
for a legacie I give and bequeath to him.
7th. Seventhly I give and bequeath and devise after the Death of
my wife JANE and MOURNING HOWELL McGLAUGHAN without issue or
before she ______ marries or lawfully prosessed of the Tract of
Land and plantation and present [?] Estate given and Bequeathed
as by my said Will is Explained [?] above I will Bequeath give
and desire after the Death of my wife JANE and after the death
of MOURNING HOWELL McGLAUGHAN without issue that all my Estate
Both Real and personable be equally divided [Except such part as
is hereafter given and bequeathed] between JOHN FLEETWOOD a
______son of ELIZABETH and WILLIAM FLEETWOOD and JOHUN
McGLAUGHAN son of JAMES McGLAUGHAN __ and THOMAS WHITMELL son of
THOMAS WHITMELL and THOMAS BRYAN son of EDWARD BRYAN all of
Bertie County my intened heirs after the Decease of the above
mentioned JANE and MOURNING without issue to them their heirs
and assigns forever.
8th EIGHTHLY I give and bequeath unto MOURNING HOWELL McGLAUGHAN
a Certain plantation and Tract of land with a Grist Mill thereon
in Bertie County Containing two hundred acres of land lastly
purchased of LAWRENCE McGUE by JOHN HOWELL _______ as by Deed
________ together withall houses and priveleges to the same
belonging to her and her heirs and assigns forever but in Case
of her Decease without issue them my Will and desire is that the
said plantation decend to her mother ELIZABETH to her and her
heirs forever.
9th. NINTHLY. I give and bequeath and devise unto JEREMIAH
HALLAM son of JOHN HALLAM a Tract of land containing by
estimation one hundred and fifty acres in Bertie County on the
east side of Chinkapin Swamp held by Deed from ROBERT FOSTER to
JOHN JONES and from JOHN JONES to JOHN HOWELL to the said
JEREMIAH HALLAM his heirs and assigns forever.
10th. TENTHLY I give and bequeath to my Brothers ROBERT HOWELL
and THOMAS
HOWELL and WILLIAM HOWELL and to the Children of my Brother
deceased and to the Children of my sister deceased to each of
them one shilling sterling money of Great Brittan if they demand
the same in a year and a day after my decease and the same to be
taken to them.
11th. ELEVENTHLY I make appointment and ordain my loving wife
JANE and my friend EDWARD BRYAN, MOURNING HOWELL McGLAUGHAN,
THOMAS WHITMELL JUNIOR [?] and THOMAS BRYAN Executors to this my
Last Will and Testament and my loving Friend THOMAS WHITMELL
SENR Trustee to see the same executed and done _________ to the
_______ intent and meaning before mentioned expressed and set
forth Revoking all former Wills Testaments gifts and c. and
declaring this to be my Last Will and Testament In Witness
whereof I have set my hand and affixes my Seal this Seventeeth
day of June in the thirtyeth year of the Reighn of our soverign
Lord George the second and in the year aforesaid of 1756.
