"Born in Ballybay, County Monaghan, North Ireland; came to Lancaster Co. PA about 1748. He had married Martha in Ireland and had (family tradition) 4 children born in Ireland before he came to America.
1754-1771 he was taxed in Little Britain Twp. Lancaster Co. PA.
Moved to Berkeley Co. VA about 1773; moved to Ft. Harrod, Mercer Co. Ky about 1783. A group of Presbyterians settled there on Salt River in 1783.
James Hanna was granted 1000 acres in Jefferson Co. KY near Harrodsburg, on Drenning Lick Creek on 01 June 1785. 1795, James Hanna was taxed in Mercer Co., KY, district of James Clark, for 4 horses and 21 cows. The Hanna family established an "Accounting House", the forerunner of banking in KY. James Arthur MacClannahan Hanna of Oak Hill, Jackson Co. OH, our 7th cousin.

Family tradition reported by George Enoch Hanna who was son of Thomas Jefferson Hanna, the son of James Hanna and Martha Pogue/Poague: "James Hanna and wife Martha migrated from N. Ireland in 1760, tarried a while in PA, moved to Berkeley Co., VA, and then to Mercer Co., KY. Four of their children, Stephen, James, Adam and Hannah moved from Mercer Co. KY to Shelby Co. This second James married Martha Pogue/Poague. Our ancestor William Hannah went to KY with the family but returned to Berkeley Co. VA where his children were born. I don't know if Sarah Jane accompanied him to KY. Their oldest son, David Hannah was born in Berkeley Co. VA in 1774.
Records show at least 12 children of James and Martha Hanna. The order of birth has not been proven. There are discrepancies in the data of different researchers."
