Executive Dept. Mar. 18, 1834. The heirs of Robert Dudley are
allowed land for his services as a Lieut. in the Contl. Line
from Feb. 12, 1776, to end of the war, deducting the quantity
heretofore allowed. John Floyd, Gov.
Gloucester Co., 5 Sept., 1844, Lucy Dudley, Jane Dudley,
daughters; (Robert Berry, James F. Berry, Lucy Jane Walker, the
lawful sons and daughter of Nancy Berry, who was a daughter of
Robert Dudley), these with Lucy Jane Digges (daughter of Robert
Dudley), Nancy Dudley, Malvina, Mildred, and Mary the lawful
children of John Dudley (son of Robert Dudley), appointed Lenox
Ailsworth of Middlesex Co. their Atty. 5 Sept., 1844.
[p.235] George D. Pace a resident of Middlesex Co. certified as
to the truth of the above relationship. 23 Sept., 1844.
Middlesex Co., Sept. 23, 1844. Ordered certified that Robert
Dudley, an officer in the Rev. War, died leaving five sons and
six daughters, viz. George, Robert, John, James and Staunton;
Nancy, Mildred, Lucy B., Jane, Frances and Malvina. That George
died without issue; that John died leaving four
children:--Nancy, Mildred, Malvina and Mary; that Staunton died
without issue; that Maivina died without issue; that Frances
married Alexander Digges of Gloucester Co. and died leaving two
children:-- Lucy Jane and James who are now residents of
Gloucester Co.; that Nancy married James Berry of Gloucester Co.
and died leaving three children:--Robert R., James F., and Lucy
Jane who married Winder Walker of Gloucester Co., and that
Robert, James, Lucy B. and Jane Dudley are now alive and
residents of Middlesex Co. Copy, teste, John Healy, Clerk.
Warrants Nos. 9036-9092 issued 17 Oct., 1844. Recorded Book 3,
page 574, Va. Land office.
Note. Lieut. Robert Dudley of Va. State Troops of the Contl.
Line. The court of Gloucester county and the court of Middlesex
county certified that Robert Dudley (Lieutenant) died leaving
five sons and six daughters.
In the following data, the Elizabeth City Co. court certified
that Robert Dudley (Lieutenant) died during the Revolutionary
War, leaving an only son, Ambrose. I give the data just as it
appears in the documents on file in the Land Office.
There were two Lieutenants Robert Dudley as evidenced on page
236, Elizabeth City Co. court, July 30, 1870. Ordered certified
that upon evidence of Frederick Vincent, filed herewith, in
affirmance of an order or certificate of heirship, heretofore
granted by it, and since burned or destroyed, and also as an
amended order, that Robert Dudley, a Lieut. of Va. State troops
on the Contl. Line, died during the Rev. war, intestate and
leaving an only son, named Ambrose. That Ambrose Dudley many
years afterwards died intestate, leaving an only daughter his
heir. That she married Eli Johnson and surviving her husband,
died intestate, leaving a son Eli Johnson who married Eliza
Boggs, and both dying intestate, left two daughters surviving
them, named Sarah Elizabeth and [p.236]
Caroline Frances, now residing in the county of Nansemond, and
are sole surviving heirs at law of Lieutenant Robert Dudley.
The court further certifies that the said Sarah Elizabeth
Johnson and Caroline Frances Johnson are loyal citizens of the
United States, since and long anterior to the late war which
commenced in 1861, and were at all times opposed to and in favor
of its suppression. True copy, William S. Howard, Clerk,
Elizabeth City Co. 25 July,1870.
Received of Register of land office, warrants for the service of
Lieut. Robert Dudley. Sent by mail to John F. Webb, of
Washington, D.C. Signed, Sallie E. Johnson, and Caroline
F.Johnson. Certified, Elisha Everett, Justice of Peace.
Lieut. Robert Dudley, according to the Gloucester and Middlesex
county orders, had five sons and six daughters. These
sons:--George, Robert, John, James and Staunton. The
daughters:-- Nancy, Mildred, Lucy, Frances and Jane and
Malvina. Of these daughters, Nancy married James Berry; Frances
married Alexander Digges. Of the sons, George and Staunton died
without issue; John had four daughters:--Nancy, Mildred, Malvina
and Mary. Nancy (Dudley) Berry had three children:--Robert,
James and Lucy who married Winder Walker. Frances (Dudley)
Digges of Gloucester Co. had two children:--Lucy Jane and James.
Robert, James, Lucy B., and Jane Dudley, sons and daughters of
Lieut. Robert Dudley were living in Middlesex county in the year
1844.

on 9 Mar 1868.
