Armed with a sharp tongue, Elisa was not a favourite of her brother Napoleon and spent little time in France.

She married a Corsican who became an Italian prince, but split with him in 1805. She agreed to Napoleon's offer that she become Grand Duchess of Tuscany.

After losing her duchy in 1814, Elisa moved to Germany, rejoined her husband and retired to Trieste.

CONFLICT: Date: Tue, 09 Mar 1999, To: Josephine Bass [email protected], From: [email protected]: "On your web page you show Dudley Haile as being the son of Thomas & Elizabeth Gatewood Haile. May I ask for your source for this? I have been working for years and would like to solve this puzzle. I do not know when Thomas or Elizabeth died and do not have wills for either. But they did name their children as Benjamin & Caty in deeds in 1742 in Essex Co., VA

As for the Dudley Haile who Married Susannah Durham before 1783, he died before May 1795 in Warren Co., NC when his will is probated. He had sons Thomas (my line), Durham, John & Gatewood.

In Mecklenberg Co., VA as early as 1777 was a Thomas Haile with wife Sally. Their children were Frances, Mary, Dudley & Leamon. Thomas married twice more & had Elizabeth D., Catherine F., Benjamin T., Edmund D., & Jonathan T. This second Dudley lived long after the Dudley that died in 1795.

From: [email protected] Date: Wed, 22 Jul 1998 To: [email protected]
Subject: Haile family: My wife's family:
Gen 1 Thomas Haile d. Mecklenbueg Co. VA
Gen 2 Dudley Haile b. 1764 m. Susannah Durham. He d. bef. 24 May 1764
Gen 3 Durham Haile b. 11 Sep 1790 Warren or Halifax Co NC m. Margaret Clendenin Sympson.
Durham's brother was Gatewood Hail
There is an extensive family of Hailes in Essex Co, VA who are allied with the Gatewoods. Do you have any data which might connect my Thomas with the Essex Co. family? Also a Capt. Thomas Haile who was Rev War in militia from Henry Co, VA but I have no connection. Thank you.

From: [email protected], Date: Sun, 5 Dec 1999 To: [email protected]: I hope I have shown the sources for my belief that the Dudley Haile who was father of Thomas, Durham, John and Gatewood was not the son of Thomas Haile of Mecklenberg county. I would like to know if there is a connection between this Dudley and the Thomas & Elizabeth Gatewood Haile of Essex Co., VA If the information below isn't clear or if you draw different conclusions please let me know.
I am more than willing to share my research. I have been helped many times and try to help others when I can. Ina Stott

It is my belief that the following groups of Hail/Haile families ought to have a common bond, but I have never been able to find the connection.
1-Dudley Haile m Susannah Durham before 1783. Wm. Durham's will was written in 1 Aug 1783 with Dudley Haile named as executor.
In the 1786 State Census of Warren Co, NC Dudley was 21 to 60, had 2 WF, 4 blacks
In the 1790 Census Warren Co., NC Dudley had 2 m under 16, 3 F. 5 blacks (I can't explain the females.)
Dudley Haile d in Warren Co., NC 24 May 1795 There are several estate court records and orphan accounts for the four sons; Thomas b 1786, Durham b 1790, John b 1792 & Gatewood b1794.
2-In Essex Co., VA: John and Mary Haile (I believe) had the following children:
A-Francis Haile (Is this Francis Haile who m Jane Waggoner or is Francis a female?)
B-John Haile, Jr. whose wife was also Mary. Their children were Richard Thomas; Ary?, Ara?, Aris? Arrington?;Williamson, Sarah, Elizabeth; Mary.
C- Thomas Haile m Elizabeth Gatewood. Their children that I can prove were Caty who m Mark Bell (or Ball). And Benjamin. (In Thomas Gatewood's will names his dau Elizabeth Haile and in the settlement Thomas Haile inherits in rights of his wife.).
D- Benjamin Haile m Arrabella ______
C- Susannah Haile m _____ Allen
3-In 1777 in Mecklenberg Co., VA are the first records for Thomas Haile and his wife Sally. They had at least 4 children: Frances, Mary, Dudley, and Leamon. Thomas married twice more and had Elizabeth D.; Catherine F; Benjamin T.; Edmund D. and Jonathan T. This Dudley Haile m 1st) Mary Willis in 1781. m 2nd Susannah Smith in 1794. m 3rd Martha Carter 1795. There are several court records he is in and in 1800 was taxed as a separate household. So he is obviously not the Dudley in Warren Co."

"There were some legal problems involving the guardianship of the children and lawsuits were filed, but all available records indicate that they lived, at least most of the time, with Peter Newell and Susannah. Those records seem to be accurate. They were taken from a biography of Benjamin Hail, a son of John Hail. The biography was published in Henderson, Ky."
