5 May 2002: I just got home from visiting and searching the
Purls & Coneys in Magnolia, MS. I met with Oscar E. Coney in
Magnolia, age 88, I have his daughters number in Memphis and
will call her next week for family info. He was a wholesale
grocer there for many years, a fine Southern gent.
I also met Rev. Millard Purl, a baptist minister for 53 years
and WWII Bronze Star. His son is a Baptist missionary to
Africa. He shared a few stories with me, gave me some names of
some cousins to email for more info. he descends from Joseph
Cunningham Purl, who was blind and ran a store in Magnolia.
Then I went over to Hattiesburg and met Curtis Holliday also
from Joseph's line.
I visited the cemetery and checked out all the Purls buried at
Magnolia, there was also a list at the library.
I visited the Coney B&B now owned by James & Sharon Lawrence.
They have completely restored the old Coney House built in 1886
by which Coney I don't know, but possibly William Drew Coney.
There is another old Coney cemetery near or at the site of Joel
Jackson Coney's home site, but i didn't find it, also didn't
have time to do the court house deeds, wills, etc.
I spent 2 days in St. Francisville, LA on the Purls and also in
Natchez so ran out of time.
had the time of my life. josie
