Notes

Settle, Albert Carroll and Settle, Henry C. COMPANY B Privates. "He was the last Mosby Ranger to pass away. He was 94 years of age. Family stories were that his job was to hide soldiers. It is very hard to find any thing written about him in the history books. I understand that the family still have his uniform; don't know who.

Mr. Settle was the last remaining member of Mosby's Partizan Rangers in Culpeper County, which once held so many of them, and is, so far as known, one of the very last of the entire organization, which under the leadership of that daring chieftain, Col. John S. Mosby, established what was known as "Mosby's Confederacy" in the counties of Fauquier, Prince William and Culpeper and from this base made such successful raids upon superior enemy forces that the daring and success of Mosby's Men became almost a proverb.
......( Also, see burial notes.)
Misc: owned farm near Griffinsburg
Misc: 93 years 8 mo 8 days; Death certificate: #13541, Richmond, VA.
Last member of the Mosby Rangers to pass away (age 94 yr's). Military: Pvt., Co. B (post war roster). 43rd Battalion, VA Cavalry, Mosby's Command (VRef973.745 K 1993, by Hugh C. Keen/Horace Mewborn); Occupation: farmer near Griffinsburg, Culp. Co., VA.

Death note: died Saturday morning after a long period of declining health.

Burial note: Funeral services were conducted from his home by his pastor, Rev. G. W. Cox of Gourdvine Baptist Church with interment in the family section of Fairview Cemetery. Military honors were given by the Culpeper Post No. 44, American Legion with Commander John L. Jeffries of the Post, in charge of the firing squad. Among the floral pieces on the grave was a silk Confederate flag, sent by the Culpeper Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy as a tribute to this soldier who "wore the gray"

The active pallbearers were six members of the Culpeper Post, John E. Duncan, Allan Rosenthal, G. E. Johnson, Eddie Gore, Charles Cloud and Weakley.

The grandchildren carried the beautiful floral tributes were: Roberta Settle, Helen Settle, Margie Compton, Mildred Brooks, Virginia Jenkins, Beatrice Coughlin, Carrie Mills, Clarence Settle, Bryant Weaver, Vincent Settle, Alvin Settle and Annie German. At the time of his death he had twenty eight grandchildren survived.
