Colonel James Callaway resided near New London and was treasurer
for the New London Academy. In 1789 he moved his citizenship
back to Bedford County, where a new county seat had been
established on 100 acres of Bramlett's land donated by William
Downey and Joseph Fuqua (another source says the land for the
county seat was donated by his Father, William Callaway.) This
new county seat was given the name Liberty, firt in history to
bear this name, but the name changed during the boom of 1890 to
Bedford City. At a court meetin gheld February 23, 1789, an
unusual compliment wa paid Callaway in the adoption of a
resolution that "whereas by his singular services as magistrate
in this county beofre its division and in Campbell County
(services from which he has lately removed) merits the attention
of the public. it is the opinion of the court, therefore, that
he be recommended a presiding member of the county court of
Bedford."
[Pat Tachick.FTW]
At Campbell county's formation, James Callaway was the most
prominent County officer and was transferred from the position
of Bedford County Lieutenant to the same office in campbell
county. Born the son of Colonel William and Elizabeth Callaway,
he had made a fine record to his credit even in a family which
had become conspicuous in public affairs. James Callaway had
served in the French and Indian Wars and was a member of the
Bedford County Patriotic Committee of 1774. He held by
commission the successive militia offfices. He built the
county's first iron works, known as "Oxford" (later, Ross'). He
owned and operated lead mines and in 1780 suppressed an
anti-government conspiracy.

"Marion County. MS. Court Records: --Ordered that Jaremiah Smith
be granted letters of administration on the estate of William
Smith, decd., by executing a sufficient bond. May Ct., 1815.
That the Jaremiah Smith in this record is the husband of Joanna
Dillon seems clear, since Richard Dillon appears thus:
--Ordered that Richard Dilion, Amanuel King, and Obed Kirkland
be appointed to appraise the estate of William Smith, the decd.,
and return an inventory with the appraisement to the office of
this court within 3 months from the date hereof May Ct., 1815."
William Smith's relationship has not been determined.
