Mother: Sorrow Susan ALLEN |
#10486: Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, &
Kniffin, Volume
5, 4th edition, 1886, Taylor Co.
GEORGE W. JETER (deceased) was born in Amelia County, Va.,
October 4, 1810, and was the eldest of nine children born to
Anderson and Sorrow S. (Allen) Jeter, a sketch of whom will be
found below. In 1816 he was brought by his parents to Green
County, Ky.
Here he grew to manhood, and after attaining his majority
learned the carpenter's trade, which he followed in connection
with his live stock business for many years. At the live stock
trade he was eminently successful for many years, driving large
droves of hogs and other stock to Southern markets. In about
1854 he discontinued the live stock business and was afterward
engaged in agricultural pursuits in connection with his trade
until his death, August 10, 1874.
He was first married in September, 1840, to Miss Susan S.
Craddock, a native of Green County, Ky., born in 1819. She was a
daughter of Robert Craddock, a native of the Old Dominion and
one of the early pioneers of Green County. Mrs. Susan S. Jeter
died in April, 1842, leaving no children. She was a consistent
member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Jeter was next married in 1845 to Miss Priscilla Hazelwood,
a native of Green County. To this union were born five children:
Daniel (deceased), Mary S., now Mrs. Jas. M. Durham; George R.;
Robert H., and Lucy H. (deceased). Mrs. Priscilla's death
occurred June 1, 1865. She was a life-long member of the
Methodist Episcopal Church.
Mr. Jeter's third marriage was in 1872, to Miss Maggie A. Shipp,
also a native of Green County, and a daughter of Thomas Shipp,
of what is now Taylor County. Mrs. Maggie A. is yet living,
having again married, and resides in Illinois.
Mr. George R. Jeter, the second son of George W. Jeter, received
a fair common-school education in youth, to which he has since
materially added by
his own exertions. His early life was passed on his father's
farm, but after attaining his majority he was employed as a
salesman in a general store in Campbellsville for several years.
For the past year, however, he has been clerk and business
manager of the Border's Hotel in same city, and is resident
agent for several insurance companies, as well as passenger
agent for the O. & M. Railway. He is a member of the Masonic
fraternity, having advanced to the R. A. degree, and is a young
man of fine business qualifications.
