"David I, who succeeded in 1124, extended the work of his mother
into the politcal orgaization of the kingdom...............
David I admired this system to the extent of importing it into
his own kingdom, which he effected partly by transporting Norman
and Breton barons and knights as the feudal superiors of
existing small landowners (the fortunes of the great families of
Bruce and Stewart were founded by this means) and partly by
converting the Celtic aristocracy of 'Mormaers' and 'Toiseachs'
into Earls and Barons. The process was assisted by his endeavour
to create a universal system of law.
David I, likewise introduced into Scotland the great offices
common to the courts of Europe; Constable, Chamberlain, Steward
and Marischal. He founded the first Royal Burgs, towns which
were granted the privilege of foreign trade in return for dues
paid directly to the King. He imported European monasticism, and
established Cistercians at Melrose,...................... "The

CHAPTER XX FROM MALCOLM CANMORE TO KING DAVID
"The crown then passed by inheritance to David, the youngest son
of Malcolm Canmore. He had spent the early years of his life at
the court of the English king, and in England married Matilda,
daughter of Waltheof (son of Siward), Earl of Northumberland and
of Huntingdon. David afterwards succeeded to the earldom of
Huntingdon."
