Will Records of Shenandoah County, Virginia 1771-1791
Will Records of Shenandoah County, Virginia Book B, OSPage: 471:
Name: Henry Cloud
My three sons: Mordecai, Daniel, and William My daughters:
Lettice, Elizabeth, Hannah, Nancy, Mary, Margaret, and Winifred
William Cloud and my son, Daniel, Exe. Written: 6 August 1787
Witnesses: Spencer Lehew, John Lehow, and James Cloud Probated:
25 September 1788.
"Owned the land that is today called Front Royal, Frederick
County, Virginia. Front Royal was originally called Lehutown.
Peter Lehew appears in Frederick County, Virginia, Order Books
as early as 1748, and his first land purchase in Frederick
County was made in 1754. This is undoubtedly the same Peter
Lehew who was granted 972 acres of land in the Northern Neck of
Virginia by Lord Fairfax in 1724. Peter Lehew was a resident of
Northumberland County, Virginia, at that time of this grant, and
the 972 acres were on Cedar Run in that part of Stafford County
which a few years later became part of Prince William County.
The deed was recorded in Prince William County in 1733. Peter's
name is reported to have appeared on a list of voters in Prince
William County, in 1741. He probably went from Prince William
County to Frederick County sometime before 1748, when his name
first appears in Frederick County, Virginia, records.
Peter Lehew's Will was recorded in Frederick County, Virginia,
Will Book 1, page 609 -- In the Name of God Amen. The 5th day
of April in the year of our Lord One Thousand, Seven Hundred and
Eighty, I, Peter Lehew of the County of Frederick in the State
of Virginia being weak in body but of perfect mind and memory.
Thanks be given unto God. Therefore calling unto mind the
Mortality of any body and knowing it is appointed for all men
once to die, do make ordain this my last Will and Testament...
It is my will and I do order that in the first place all my just
debts and funeral charges be paid and satisfied. Item, I give
and bequeath unto my well beloved wife Frances all my moveable
estate during her natural life or widowhood and at her death or
marriage my will and desire is that it may be equally divided
amongst my children that shall not be married and to them and to
their heirs.
Item, I give and bequeath unto my loving son Spencer Lehue the
sum of 5 shillings sterling to him and to his heirs.
Item, I give and bequeath unto my loving son William Lehue 35
acres of land on the east side of the creek to be taken of the
lower part of my land to him and his heirs.
Item, I give and bequeath unto my loving son Jeremiah Lehue 35
acres of land on the east side of the creek and to join my son
William Lehue to him and his heirs.
Item, I give and bequeath to my loving son Francis Lahue 35
acres of land on the south side of the main road where he now
lives to him and to his heirs.
Item, I give and bequeath unto my loving son David LeHue 35
acres of land whereon I now live to him and to his heirs.
Item, I give and bequeath unto my loving daughter, Winifred
Owen, one acre of land on the west side of the road and lower
part of my land joining Millers Land to her and to her heirs.
Item, I give and bequeath unto my loving daughter Elizabeth
Lehue 4 acres of land in the forks of the road on the west part
of my land to her and to her heirs.
Item, I give and bequeath unto my two daughter Junia Lehue and
Hannah Lehue one acre of land east in the forks of the road and
west part of my plantation to them and to their heirs. And
lastly, I do hereby nominate and appoint my well beloved wife
Frances and loving son David Lehue executors of this my last
Will and Testament...
Proved 6 Aug 1782 with the following codicil - Further it is my
will and desire as my son William Lehew will not except of my
legacy of 35 acres of land on the east side of the creek, I give
and bequeath the said land to my beloved daughter Elizabeth
Lehew."
