Savannah "Vannie" DEHAY

ABT 1840 - ____

ID Number: I19113

  • RESIDENCE: MS and Sherrill, AR and Memphis, TN
  • BIRTH: ABT 1840, MS
  • DEATH: Rosedale, MS
  • BURIAL: Jones Plot, Memphis, TN
  • RESOURCES: See: [S615]
Father: Proctor Sherwood DEHAY
Mother: Frances Elizabeth NORTON

Family 1 : Frederick Coghill JONES
  1.  Frederick Halbert JONES
  2.  Fredericka JONES

Notes

From the Berkeley Democrat published at Moncks Corner, SC
OBIT: "A telegram received by the De Hay family thursday morning informed us of the death of a relative, Mrs. Vannie De Hay Jones, who resided with her daughter in Rosedale, MS. Mrs. Jones suffered the loss of her husband, Frederick C. Jones, a year ago last Christmas. He died quite suddenly and this, in part, hastened her death. At that time they were living in Sherrill, Arkansas. She leaves a son and the above mentioned daughter, Mrs. Fredericka Vardaman. After the funeral service in Rosedale, the body of Mrs. Jones will be taken to Memphis, TN where it is to be laid to rest beside that of her husband in the Jones plot.

In the passing of this relative the De Hay family has lost one of its finest members, a lovely Christian woman, firm in her convictions, and undaunted and steadfast in her endeavors, yet withal gracious and kindly in her contacts with those about her. She was descended from John De Hay who served in the American Revolution. Her grandfather Benjamin De Hay disposed of large holdings of real estate and other properties near Moncks Corner just before the War Between the States, and established a new home in the State of MS where fortune contined to favor him even in the lean years of the War."

It has been only within the last few years that the present generation of De Hay's in Lower St. John's Berkeley has come in touch with the MS branch of the family, and this through several visits of Mrs. Jones to the De Hay's at Moncks Corner, SC. For over 30 years she had been deeply concerned in the study of genealogy and two trips to Europe yielded for has as much in family history as in art and other old world treasures.

A Letter dated 7 Sep 1965 from Estelle De Hay of Greensboro, NC mentions Cousin Vannie as the last the Benjamin De Hay and Boxworth line named De Hay that moved to MS. Vannie came to SC after 1930 and with Estelle's father worked out the line back to 1729. Estelle also mentioned in her letter Abraham De Haye (fils de Pierre) et Madeline and the date Dec 8, 1700 as the most likely parents of a son Jean Andre who married Margarett O'Carroll in 1729. She stated her oldest brother was an elder in the Second Presbyterian Church in Charleston. [S615]
