Notes

Zacchaeus Corley is probaby of Scotch descent. Various spellings include MacCorley, MacCauley, and Cauley are found in the Edgefield Co. South Carolina records. Zacchaeus Corley's military records spell Corley as we do. At the age of 18 he joined Washington's army going in with Captain Butler's Volunteers of Edgefield District, of the Colony of South Carolina. Other Corleys in the rolls incude Abner Corley, Lt. John Corley, Sherod Corley and Nathaneal Corley. Tradition holds that Zacchaeus had a brother John but this has not been established. Zack served two years in the army and returned to Edgefield and established a home.

In 1818 Zack received a land grant for his service in the military in the foot-hills of the Appalachians, to the south of the present city of Birmingham, Alabama in what is today Bibb Co. AL moving there to raise his family. Tradition holds that Zach had twelve children, 6 sons and 6 daughters but only 5 sons have been identified thus far.
