delegates to the State Convention that passed the ordinance of

"William Baugh Shell was b. about 1801 m. Nancy S. Nance, dau of
Clement Nance and Elizabeth Sanders Gilliam of Newberry Co.,
moved to Coweta Co., GA about 1832; he and his wife were among
the founders of Tranquil Methodist Church Turin, Coweta Co.;
1845 elected Judge of Inferior Count Coweta Co., was a delegate
to state Convention in Savannah which passed the ordinance of
secession, 1861; d. about 1870) Settlement of estate in Coweta,
Co."

William Baugh Shell, "born near Prosperity, SC, on 4-3-1801, d.
7-28-1870, and his wife Nancy Sims Nance Shell, b. 1809, d.
1881, came to Coweta Co. from Newberry Co., SC, about 1828.
William Baugh Shell was the son of Harmon Shell and Martha
Eppes. Martha' s parents were John Eppes (1746-1824) and
Elizabeth Baugh (1750-1816).
Harmon Shell was the son of William Shell, Revolutionary War
soldier (grave marker in Tranquil Cemetery), and his wife,
Amelia Ellis.
William Baugh Shell and Nancy Nance Shell received a land grant
about 1828 near what is now Turin. Their children were John
Blakely Shell, Thomas Edward Shell, and Frances Shell who m. Dr.
John Gay.
William Baugh Shell gave the land for the original Tranquil
Methodist Church and Tranquil Cemetery near what is now Standing
Rock Road in Coweta Co. The church brought its name from
Tranquil Church in South Carolina, and later became the Turin
Methodist Church. William Baugh Shell was one of three delegates
to the State Convention in Milledgeville that passed the
ordinance of secession. He retained the pen with which he signed
the ordinance."

"There has never been a time in the history of the church that
the Shell family was not represented on the official board of
Tranquil Methodist Church, at Turin. Charter members, as
remembered by their descendants, were Harmon Shell, William
Shell and wife, Nancy, Isom Shell and wife Mary, Richard
Leavelll and wife, Mrs. Page, the mother of Dr. G. H. Page.
There has been an evergereen Sunday school in the church, with
only six superintendents in all the years. They are as follows:
William Shell, Patrick Crmichael, J. C. Elmore, Robert Hodnett,
A. S. Carmichael, and Z. Christopher."

William Baugh Shell was one of the Georgia delegates who signed
the ordinance for Georgia's secession from the Union. The pen
with which he signed is still in the Shell family.
