"There appears to be considerable uncertainty as to the identity
of Herbastus, shown here as progenitor of this family. It
appears that he probably came from Denmark. Suggestions that he
was a son of Harald 'Bluetooth', King of Denmark and Norway,
appear to be wholly speculative. However, he must have been in a
position of rank or influence given that his daughters married
influential people. The daughters shown below are as reported in
various web sites (which are inconsistent with each other, not
least in respect of their dates) but there is a suspicion that
one or two of the women who have been identified as his
daughters have been so merely because they were reported to have
been "de Crepon" and are of this period. The position is further
complicated by the fact that the different daughters are often
confused with each other, different sources allocating their
husbands differently between them. The following is therefore
subject to revision !!"

"Samuel John McCants married Eliza E. Holt Simmons, daughter of
John James Simmons and Mary Catherine Williamson. Mary Catherine
is also the mother of Charles Canty Clark by Patrick Clark, her
first husband whose death we are trying to document. Charles
Canty is my ggg grandfather. As if that weren't enough, John
James also married Sarah Catherine (___), and their daughter
Margaret Pinckney Simmons is my ggg grandmother."

"Samuel John McCants is my g-g-grandfather (b. 5 Dec. 1842 in W.
Feliciana Parish, LA, resided in Rapides Parish and d. 24 Jan.
1918 in Evergreen, San Jacinto Co., TX. My g-grandmother was his
daughter, Martha Elizabeth McCants, wife of Joseph Edward Wright
(of San Jacinto and Ellis Co., TX). I recently obtained
information from the Texas State Archives regarding a Widow's
application for a Pension filed by his last wife, Mary M.
McCants on 26 June 1918 and approved 8 July, 1918 in case it
should be of interest to any McCants family member. It states he
enlisted in Company E, Regiment: Captain McCordues Company,
Elmores Regiment, 20th Texas Infantry. The statement from the
Adjutant General's office in Washington dated 3 Jul. 1918 states
that "S. J. McCants, Pvt. Co. E. 20 Regt. Texas Inf. C.S.A. was
enlisted March 30, 1862 and Muster Roll for Feby. 29, 1864 (last
on file) shows him: 'Present.' No record of capture or parole."
The Affidavit of witnesses were signed by R.P. Brown and J.W.
Griffin. R.P. Brown served in the same Company with him. J.W.
Griffin states that he was in Company A, Dan Egbert, Captain,
Fullcrade(sp?)Regiment stationed at Galveston, Texas and they
were boys together. Mary M. McCants' Mortuary Warrant
Application was attached. It states she died 5 Oct. 1920 in
Cleveland, Liberty Co., TX.
