William MARKHAM

ABT 1610 - ____

ID Number: I22221

Father: (RESEARCH QUERY) MARKHAM of VA & MD

Family 1 : PENN
  1.  William MARKHAM Lt. Gov. of Pennsylvania

Notes

"N. N. Penne, the dau of Giles Penn & Joan Gilbeart, who is thought to have married William Markham of Ollerton, Notts, whose origins are suggested in The Dictionary of American Biography. The seal he is said to have used was that of the Markhams of Sedgebrooke, Notts. from which the Ollerton branch descended: Azure on a chief Or, a demi-lion rampant issu.

The issue of William Markham (above) and N. N. Penn, called nephews by Admiral Penn:
1. William Markham b. abt. 1635; d. testate in Philidelphia 12 4m (June) 1704;
2. George Markham."

"William Markham, Colonial period Governor of Pennslvania. The founder Markham was sent to America in 1681 to serve as Deputy Governor, organize the council and the courts. He also helped select the site for Philadelphia...1693-1699.
Markham was a close relative of Wm Penn, perhaps a cousin thru one of Admiral Penn's sisters or the previous generation, Capt. Giles Penn. Penna history provides few details on WM Markham after his initial work in the formation of the Colony."

"This William Markham was the son of William Markham of Ollerton, Notts., probably originally of the Sedgebrook, Lincolnshire line which began with Sir Robert de Markham, Chief Justice of England, b. 1368 d. 31 Dec 1409 who m. Elizabeth de Cresi-Cressy b. 1378, dau of Sir John de Cresi. William Penn, the Founder and William Markham, Deputy Gov.of PA first cousins. William Markham represented Willam Penn the Founder and Proprietor during the boundary disputes with the Lord Baltimore of Maryland, which was not entirely settled until after William Penn's death."
