John Sanders ASHLEY

25 Jan 1759 - 26 Nov 1852

ID Number: I73521

  • RESIDENCE: Anson Co. NC and Laurens Co. SC
  • RELIGION: Warrior Creek Baptist Church in SC
  • BIRTH: 25 Jan 1759, Anson Co. North Carolina
  • DEATH: 26 Nov 1852, Coffee Co. Tennessee [368711]
  • BURIAL: Manley Cemetery, Coffee, Co. TN
  • RESOURCES: See: LDS GNZP-ZQ

Family 1 : Elizabeth GARRETT

Notes

CONFLICT in death place and date; FROM: Correspondence from Betty Ashley [email protected], to, Edward Fairchild, [email protected]. Gives death date as 26 Nov 1852, death place as Coffee, Tennessee instead of Laurens Co. South Carolina 13 Dec 1830.

Father: John Ashley; Mother: Mary Frances Shepherd

"We descendants of John Ashley (who have lived near where he is actually buried in the Manley Cemetery, Coffee Co TN) refer to him as "Papa John" to keep him straight from all the other John Ashleys in the family. I am a descendant of James Perry?) Ashley and Lucy McCrary of Coffee Co TN. James Ashley's father John Ashley deeded his land in Laurens CoSC to youngest son Williamson Ashley about 1830. Sometime after 1830 he moved west living with sons Thomas in Livingston Co KY and was there around 1840 when Thomas died and with James in Coffee Co TN 1850. Long ago one researcher assumed he died during the 1830s because of that deed. However in truth he died at age 100 in Coffee Co TN. The erroneous information published by our cousin Edward Garrett in his book was spun by another cousin now dead who found the 1830 deed and decided to have a Rev. War marker and gravemarker placed in Laurens Co SC. She had no idea where he died. She fabricated the entire scenario about the Rev. to join DAR. Indeed, we believe he was probably was a Tory. Some of the Ashleys did go to GA for a time during the Rev years and our John might have been there.
Another John Ashley was born 1759. Our John Ashley was born 1752 according to census records. Our John Ashley was recorded in Coffee Co TN age 98 in 1850 living with son James and daughter in law Lucy McCrary. Please go to the trouble of reading these census records to get the true story and do not perpetuate the false information any further. John Ashley was also a member of Garrison Forks Baptist Church (Beford/Coffee Co)TN having been released by letter from Warrior Creek Baptist Church in SC. This information is in the church records of Garrison Fork Church which was near where he is now buried. His sons Thomas and William were married there. His son James was married nearby in Rutherford Co TN."

Old Churches Ministers, and Families of Virginia. Article XLVIII.
"I take from the same source (Foote's Sketches) the following notice of the Carrington family, whose members abound in this part of Virginia. Mr. Paul Carrington and his wife (who was of the Henningham family) emigrated from Ireland to Barbadoes, where he died early in the eighteenth century, leaving a widow and a numerous family of children."

"The George Carrington that went to Virginia from Barbados was the 9th. son of Dr. Paul and Hemingham Carrington. George Carrington was born in 1711 in Barbados and emigrated to Virginia in 1723 with the Mayo brothers Joseph and William and their families. Dr. Paul Carrington was the 2nd. son of Paul Carrington and his wife Sarah Haughton. Dr. Paul was married twice, first to Thomazin Waterland on 10 May 1687 in St. Michael Barbados, and secondly to Hemingham Codrington, although this marriage was not recorded (see " Genealogies of Barbados Families"- compiled by James C Brandow 1983. ISBN 0-8063-1004-9). Dr. Paul was born abt. 1665 in Barbados, he was a wealthy merchant, planter and chirurgeon, and engaged in trade between the West Indies, the North American colonies and England. About 1708 he purchased "Carringtons" one of the largest sugar plantations in St. Philip. He died at sea in 1716.

You might also be interested in the names mentioned in the will of Elizabeth Carrington, one of the daus. of Dr. Paul Carrington from his first wife Thomazin Waterland. Elizabeth was born abt. 1688 and died in 1766. In her will she mentions among others, the following:- Cousin Elizabeth Adams- spinster, cousins Elizabeth and Millicent Adams, and their mother Elizabeth Adams, Miss Elizabeth Adamson, Richard Adamson and brother Samuel Adamson.

Dr. Paul's father was Paul Carrington, who emigrated to Barbados sometime between 1638 and 1665. He was a small sugar planter. In his will of 1666 he refers to Ireland as his home, but where he lived in Ireland, who his parents were and why he came to Barbados remains a mystery. It is also possible that Paul Carrington was born in England. His wife Sarah Haughton was also of English ancestry. Best of luck, Stanley Carrington. The will of Dr. Paul Carrington of St. Philip's Parish was dated 21 February 1714 and probated 7 October 1724. The testator left Barbados eight years before and was not heard of since; therefore, by common opinion, he perished at sea. Mentioned were his wife, Henningham, his daughters, Sarah, Elizabeth, Ann, Mary, and Hannah, and his sons, Nathaniel, Paul, Codrington, John, his twin, Robert, George(3), Joseph, and Edward.

His wife was to receive one-third of the estate during her life time as well as half of the household goods, furniture, and riding horse. Nathaniel was to receive the remainder of the estate.

Sarah was to get L10 one year after his decease. Elizabeth and Ann were to receive L500 each two years after his decease. Mary, Hannah, Paul, Codrington, Robert, John, George, Joseph, and Edward were to get L500 each at age 21.

The executors were Nathaniel and Paul or the eldest surviving son at age 21. His friends, the Honourable John Sandford, James Hannah, and Robert Osborne, were the trustees and each to receive L5. (RB6/7/469)

DAR # 593761 gives 1673, Cheshire, England as his date and place of birth.

The Carrington Family of VA, from Ntl. Gen. Soc. Quarterly, Vol. 70 (1982), p. 248-254 gives ca. 1665, Barbados, for his birth, along with several pages on the scandelous first marriage and annulment to Thomazin Waterland, a marriage fraught with adultery on both parts, etc.

CARRINGTON FAMILY

Mr. Peyton R. Carrington, of Richmond, writes an interesting letter concerning the Carrington family. He quotes from a letter of Mrs. Elizabeth Carrington of Buckinghamshire, England, 18 July, 1868: "I was perfectly aware of the connection between your branch of the Carrington family, that is if you are descended from the George Carrington, son of Mr. Paul Carrington, who went to America. He is put down in our record as having emigrated

"The granddaughter of George, the emigrant, Miss Eliza G. Carrington, daughter of his youngest son, Major Mayo Carrington was alive in 1868, and remembered the crest of the family on some pewter plate that she had brought from her old home, Boston Hill, Cumberland Co., but could not distinctly describe the crest.

The arms of the family of Mrs. Elizabeth Carrington of Buckinghamshire, England are: "Ar on a bend sa. three lozenges of the field. Crest - out of a ducal coronet or a unicorn's head sa.

George Carrington came to Virginia in 1723, with the family of Joseph and William Mayo. But it seems that long ere that time, Paul, his father, had visited Virginia, as the following letters attest:
