Martha JAQUELIN

31 Jan 1711 - 1792

ID Number: I56710

  • RESIDENCE: Jamestown & Richmond, VA
  • BIRTH: 31 Jan 1711, Jamestown, Virginia
  • DEATH: 1792, Richmond, Virginia
  • BURIAL: old Episcopal Church upon Richmond Hill (St. John).
  • RESOURCES: See: [S2066]
Father: Edward JAQUELIN "the Immigrant"
Mother: Martha CARY

Notes

unmarried. d.s.p. "Martha Jaquelin((2)) (Edward Jaquelin((1))), b. January 31, 1711; d. 1792, unmarried, the second daughter of Edward Jaquelin. She survived every member of her family, and lived a maiden lady to the advanced age of eighty-one. After her father's death she removed from Jamestown to Richmond. She was well educated, sensible, and very much devoted to literature. Her portrait, which was taken when she was about the age of fifteen (Ambler MS. says twenty, but as it was taken with the others, she must have been only fifteen, as she was four years younger than her brother Matthew, who died at twenty.-J. D. M.), shows that she must have been very handsome. She gave away three large fortunes:
One to her nephew, Edward Smith;
One to her nephew, Thomas Rootes, Esq., of White Marsh, in the County of Gloucester;
One to her nephew, Jaquelin Ambler, at her death.
She was a very fine, exemplary woman, and upon her testimony, traced by the pen of her most excellent nephew, rests many of the facts which are mentioned in Ambler MS."

Dr. John S. PEMBERTON C.S.A.

8 Jul 1831 - 16 Aug 1888

ID Number: I104505

  • TITLE: Dr.
  • OCCUPATION: CSA; invented Coca Cola; pharmacist
  • RESIDENCE: Crawford and Muscogee, Columbus, GA
  • BIRTH: 8 Jul 1831, Knoxville, Crawford, Georgia
  • DEATH: 16 Aug 1888, Atlanta, Fulton, Georgia
  • BURIAL: Historic Linwood Cem. Muscogee, Columbus, Georgia
  • RESOURCES: See: LDS Bio notes [S1432]
Father: James Clifford PEMBERTON
Mother: Martha L. WORSHAM

Notes

Aka: John (Smith or Stith or Stytin or Styth) Pemberton.

Columbus, Georgia - http://www.knology.net/~cgautry/linwood.html

John Pemberton's grave: Columbus, was the home of Dr. John S. Pemberton, a pharmacist who concocted the original (and still secret) formula for Coca-Cola syrup. He died in 1888; his grave can be viewed in Linwood Cemetery in one of the older sections of town. Pemberton fought for the Confederacy in the War Between the States along with 200 other cemetery residents -- his stone is marked with a Confederate Army/Masons seal rather than the anticipated coke bottle engraving...

Also in town, the Pemberton House & Apothecary Shop on 11 7th Street features a recreated pharmacy scene and a Pemberton-like mannequin. He was allegedly a morphine addict. Dr. Pemberton sold the secret formula for $1,750.

Spouse: Ann Eliza Clifford Lewis Disc #28 Pin #565276 Marriage: 12 Oct 1853

Historic Linwood Cemetery, Columbus, Georgia:
In 1828, Edward Lloyd Thomas and his son Truman were surveying land in West Central Georgia for what would become Columbus, Georgia. Working in the harsh conditions of the winter of 1827 - 1828, Truman became ill in March. Suffering for over a week, Truman passed away on March 26, 1828. The next day, Edward buried his son. The following month, Edward surveyed the four acres surrounding the grave of his son for use as a cemetery for Columbus.

Located behind the Old City Hospital, now the Medical Center, Linwood Cemetery was included in the 1828 plan of Columbus, Georgia as the first public cemetery. Known as the 'City Cemetery", Linwood did not receive its current name until City Council action on November 7, 1894. Rich in tradition and history, Linwood is the final resting-place for some 500 Confederate soldiers, sailors, Columbus Guard and Columbus Artillery as well as several nationally notable persons. Linwood Cemetery is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Columbus, Georgia is the site of the last Civil War land battle east of the Mississippi River. On Easter Sunday, April 16, 1865 (a week after the Surrender at Appomattox), Wilson's Federal Raiders, being 4,000 strong, overran a Confederate entrenchment over a mile long in Alabama, crossed the Chattahoochee River entering Georgia and captured Columbus.
