This biography of his father fits the Peyton 1738-1794 but this
is just a guess.
BIOGRAPHY:
"Peyton was a wealthy man. He loaned money to the government and
lived in Virginia. His wife died during the American
Revolutionary War, when their son, John, was about two weeks
old. There was a little girl Susanah who was also called Sarah.
Peyton was a Quartermaster in the American Revolutionary War,
and Captain of a ship which he sailed to the West Indies. He
returned when John was 12 years of age. Peyton put a great deal
of money aside for his children. John was placed in the care of
one of his uncles. This uncle was unkind to John and so he ran
away to live with a man named Jacob Marker of Jattenson Creek.
Family tradition is that the government repudiated the debt to
Petton and that he was given land for the money.
Peyton was a descendant of Pocahontas. Reference: Mrs. L. Cary
of New Haven, Conn."
