Tompkinsville, KY. The 5th KY Cav, 9th MI Cav, 1st AL Cav, 5th
OH Cav and a Section of the 10th WI Battery were assigned to the
3rd Brigade, Cavalary Command, Military divison of the
Mississippi, Army and Dept. of the TN. Src: "Index to Federal
Civil War Pensions", NARA, Wash DC.
William H. Alvis was wounded in action at the Battle of Monroe's
Cross Roads, NC on Mar 10, 1865. He mustered out of service at
Louisville, KY on May 2, 1865. His physical description was
fair complexion, dark hair and 6ft 2 inches tall. His second
wife, Sarah Turner Alvis filed for a pension based on his
service in the 5th KY Calvalry on 24 Oct 1898 and was awarded a
widow's pension.
1850 Census occupation listed as a laborer.
1870 Census as farmer and listed as disabled on the 1890
census.w/wife.
1880 census, Monroe Co. KY w/wife, 5-yr old niece.
Wm Alvis 61 VA, Nancy Alvis 60 KY
Nancy T. Alvis 5 Niece
Sarah E. Alvis 21 KY
Andrew J. Alvis 19 KY
Thomas Alvis 16 KY
Robert Alvis 14 KY
Preston Alvis 12 KY
Benton Alvis 12 KY
Jacob Alvis 9
Elvira Alvis 6
Martha Alvis 4
Henry and William Alvis both served in the Civil War-Union.
There are conflicting records in the 1850 census and Monroe Co.
KY cemetery records, the census lists the wife of Wm. Alvis as
being a Nancy. The cemetery record says that William Alvis
wife's name was Sarah, and there is a Nancy Alvis buried in the
old cemetery - I guess the last one buried there was about 1890.
