ISSUE
WILLJAM STROTHER, V, b. 1653; d. 1726, in King George County. He
lived at the original seat of his father and was a Vestryman of
Hanover Parish as well as Sheriff of King George County.
To William COCKE, Chicheley Corbin THACKER, Francis THORNTON,
Jr. (his brother-in-law), and himself there was patented, on
20th December, 1718, 6000 acres of land in St. Mary's Parish,
Essex County, near the Falls of the Rappahannock.
He m. circa 1694, Margaret THORNTON, b. 2d April, 1678, dau. of
Francis THORNTON, Sr., 1651-1726, of Stafford County, and Alice
SAVAGE, dau. of "Capt. Anthony SAVAGE, Esquire," Justice of
Gloucester County, and High Sheriff.
"On Dec. 20, 17I8, there was patented to Wm. Cocke, Chicheley
Corbin Thacker, Francis Thornton, Jr., and Wm. Strother, 6,000
acres of land in St. Mary's parish, Essex county (now
Spottsylvania), beginning on a great swamp called Massaponnax,
about three miles from the Falls of the Rappahannock. He was a
vestryman of Hanover parish and married Margaret, b. April 2,
1678, dau of Francis Thornton and his wife Alice, dau of Capt.
Anthony Savage, of Gloucester Co. In I722, he gave to his son
"Will" Strother, Jr., the land devised him by his father, except
what had been sold to John Strother. On July 26, 1726, his will
was admitted to probate, and his widow qualified as exrx, but
the first Will Book (I720-1744) of King George Co. containing it
was lost during the late war."

and another son vi. GEORGE STROTHER, b. Abt. 1712. shows No
daus. Alice, Mary or Anne.
"William Strother, son of the above William Strother and Dorothy
Savage, married his first cousin, Margaret Thornton. Their
mothers, Dorothy Savage Strother and Alice Savage Thornton,
being sisters and daughters of Captain Anthony Savage and his
wife, Alice Stafford."
"William and Margaret Strother were close friends and neighbors
of Augustine Washington, father of George Washington. Their
farms adjoined and after the death of William Strother in 1726,
two hundred eighty acres of this homestead with its two-story (8
bedroom) house was sold to Augustine Washington and became a
part of Wakefield, recently restored as the birthplace of George
Washington (Tim's note: This information is incorrect. This
property was Ferry Farms not Wakefield. While George Washington
did spend some of his younger years here he was not born here.)
In 1929 this large brick house was said to have been in good
condition."

William Strother, son of William and Dorothy Strother, was born
about 1663 and died 1726. He was High Sheriff of King George
County, Virginia and a vestryman of Handover Parish and was
called "Captain Strother". He was Gentleman Justice of King
George County.
On March 6, 1723, a meeting of the Justice Court was held in
King George County, with the following members present:
