"James Briscoe Scruggs (son of Gross Franklin Scruggs and Anne M. Briscoe)1 was born October 12, 1835 in Scott County Kentucky. He married Mary Isabelle Hastings Dial on September 14, 1865 in Robertson County Texas
(by Rev. Wm.B. Eaves) Mary Isabelle Hastings Dial, the daughter of Carlington Coker Dial and his wife Pamelia Scogen.


James Briscoe Scruggs was educated at Rural Academy, near Gastilian Springs, Summer County, Tennessee. He moved with his father's family to Clinton County, Missouri, in 1856.


In June 1861 he organized Company C. Hugh ts Regiment, Missouri State Guards, of which company he was elected first Lieutenant. He was wounded at the Battle of Wilson's Creek near Springfield, Missouri August 1861. He commanded his company at Lexington, Missouri, where Colonel Mulligan was captured with command, after three days siege. At the disbandment of the Missouri State Guards, he went to Sunflower County, Mississippi, with his father's family and Joined as private the Third Mississippi Regiment, from which he was detailed in the Spring of 1863 into the Quartermaster's Department at Vicksburg, Mississippi, where he was awarded for competent and satisfactory service a commission of Major. From there he was ordered to the Trans-Mississippi Department, April 1864, to report to Major William Myrick at Waco, Texas. He remained in Texas, settling finally in Dallas, where he became a prominent citizen and "Old Resident" He died there May 10, 1910.
