Joseph HAWKINS

ABT 1730 - BEF 1788

ID Number: I97284

  • RESIDENCE: Amelia and Prince Edward Co. VA
  • BIRTH: ABT 1730
  • DEATH: BEF 1788
  • RESOURCES: See: [S3548]

Family 1 : Sarah MARCHBANKS

Notes

In 1757 Joseph Hawkins sold 140 acres to William Ferguson for £50. The deed described the property as “being land George Marchbanks willed to his daughter, Sarah, with all houses,... “ This 140 acres was more likely the gift from her brother George Marchbanks. No wife relinquished a dower right. Ferguson sold this land to Frances Williamson in 1763 who left it to her son Jacob Williamson in her Amelia County will (will dated 30 Dec. 1768, recorded 26 Jan. 1769). Evidently Jacob discovered Sarah had never relinquished her rights to the land. So, in 1770, Joseph Hawkins and Sarah, his wife, then of Prince Edward County, executed a deed acknowledging the sale of land to Jacob Williamson. This time Sarah relinquished her dower right.

Children:
1. Laban Hawkins married Catherine McGehee 30 December 1784.
2. Nancy Hawkins
3. Isaiah Hawkins
4. William Hawkins
5. Abner Hawkins
6. Elizabeth Hawkins
7. Obediah Hawkins married Sally Hudgins, daughter of William Hudgins, in Prince Edward County 7 April (bond) 1797.
8. Mary Hawkins married Abraham McGehee in Prince Edward County 24 April (bond) 1799.

"Francis (Francois) POSEY was born in 1615 in Cambrai, France. He died before 24 May 1654 in Charles Co., Maryland. At a Court held at Putuxent, Maryland on April 24, 1655, Henry Fox, a creditor, requisted "right to settle the estate of Francis Posey, deceased", and this was granted. He was christened in Huguenot.

He married in Virginia, as records show he paid for the transport of persons from Virginia to Maryland. His wife arrived in Maryland around 1743 under the protection of a Mr. Fenwick who paid for her transportation and who was reimbursed by Frances Posey for such cost. Seven years later he received a grant of 50 acres for land for the transport of "His now wife" into Maryland. He also received land grants in Maryland for the transport of other people into the providence.

The first record found of him in America was in Henrico County, Virginia in 1636. His name appears as "Fr. Posey" on a list of 40 headrights for 2,000 acres of land in Henrico County that belonged to a William Farrar. His name appears along with two others on an "oath of Fealty" dated January 2, 1640 in Maryland. He received 100 acres of land, not the normal 50 acres that was given to an individual. This indicates that he was know by friends in Maryland before his arrival. These friends may have known him through his family in France or the church in England. On March 16, 1641 he was present, along with all freemen, at the Assembly and was recorded as a citizen from St Clements Hundred.

He was a Planter and grew tobacco. Records show that he had purchased 3,450 acres over a period of 10 to 15 years. Records also show that he paid 170 pounds of tobacco for suit of clothes, the payment due on March 1, 1642. He served as proxie for seven other persons, therefore casting eight votes. He served on many juries over the years and as the Burgess in the Assembly from 1641 to 1650."

---"Francis POSEY was transported to VA by 1636, and recieved land for his own transportation in 1640 to Charles Co., MD. In 1650 he demanded land in right of his wife, whom be bought of Mr. FENWICK, whose servant she was, being for her transportation about 7 years since. There are assertions by some he was born in France, and claims of descent from the Poschet family of Voyaux, Cambrai. No one has ever provided reference to source documents to support these claims."

Part of a letter posted by Michael Allison, 1 Feb 2000, # 933:"...Unbeknownst to many, that illustrious POSCHET pedigree many of us embrace is not so ancient at all. Check the French records! It was not established until 1749 by PIERRE JOSEPH POSCHET who presented records in attempt to get a letter patent of nobility...But not everyone fell for the scam. On May 28, 1665, Mr. Can den Leene, Knight, Councilor to His Majesty the King and his first King-at-Arms, reported that he was not able to authenticate the Poschet's claim of nobility. He stated that he had not found any verified, legal titles in the Poschet's history...All evidence coming out of France states "Fraud"....I've seen the case they built in this book and I've convinced. I think that we fell hook line and sinker for a scam -- just like the French government did in 1749! "

"Anne Soblet, b. say 1684; m. Pierre Chastain. This identity is subject to a bit of debate. The sole reference to her is:"3 April, 1723, died Anne Soblet the -- --- ---sieur Pierre Chastain, age about --years; was buried the fourth of the month" To achieve the identity suggested above, it is necessary to supply in the blanks "the wife of" Unaided by other references. it would be just as possible to supply
alternatively "the daughter of" and thus make her wife of one of the young Soblets. However, the death register also gives this reference:
"The 12th of January, 1722 [1723], died Jan. Chastain, daughter of ---ieur Chastain and of Anne Chastain, her father and mother, aged about 6 years; was buried the 13th of the month, on Sunday, at three o'clock in the afternoon". This presumably refers to the same Anne and makes her wife of Pierre Chastain, hence, born a Soblet."
