Notes

Will dated 18 Nov 1724: mentions Son, John; Son, Thos.; dau. Margaret; dau-in-law Alice Catlett; granddau, Martha Taliaferro; grandson Catlett Conway; and whatever else I have not given away, to be divided equally among my five children: John, Thomas, Mary, Elizabeth and Rebecca. Exec: sons, John & Thos. Wit: John Elliott, John Evars and John Catlett.

John is the only son of Col. John Catlett and Elizabeth Underwood to leave male issue. It is thought that this John married twice and that Lawrence, and perhaps Elizabeth were by his first wife, who it is believed, was a dau of Major Lawrence Smith, of Bacon's Rebellion. There are deeds recorded in Spotsylvania Co. to Jno. Catlett, Jr. and Richard Buckner, in 1722 from Augustine Smith, the son of Major Lawrence. "Jno certainly married Elizabeth Gaines, dau of Dan'l Gaines, who is believed to have married Miss Rowzie half-sister of Col. Jno. Catlett the imgt. Capt. Dan'l Gaines in his will Essex Co. 18 Aug 1682 mentions wife Margaret and orphans of Col. Jno. Catlett..... and calls Jno. Catlett his kinsman. In 1671 Mrs. Elizabeth Catlett, widow of Col. Jno. gave power of attorney to Mr. Dan'l Gaines and made him overseer of her will. After a suit in May court 1673 between Rev. Amory Butler and Capt. Thos. Hawkins, who married the sister of Elizabeth Underwood, Dan'l Gaines took charge of the Catlett children and Rev Butler of the estate (will from Essex records) (Stubbs p. 17).

CATLETT.--Richmond Co. records. A mar. contract, Apr. 20, 1672, between Amory Butler of Rapp'k Co., Clerk, and Mrs. Elizabeth Catlett of same, widow of Col. John Catlett, states that Col. C. by his will directed his estate in England to be devoted to the education of his
children in that country. Col. John C. was Justice of Rapp'k Co. 1665. From Essex Co.records it appears that John Catlett of Essex Co., Va., gave power of att'y, June 10, 1701, to John Munford of London, Gent., to sell "all my lands," &c., at Cittingbourne in Kent, and at Radweisham in Kent, Eng'd. This was the 2d John. It is pro. that the elder Col. Jno. C. named Sittingbourne parish in Va. after his English estate.
(S.) It appears from this that the Catletts were landed gentry in Kent prior to 1700, yet the name does not appear among the landed gentry of that shire in the list of 1673, nor in Burke's General Armory. (See CATLETT, p. 244.)

William Lindsey, whose estate was appraised by Tobias Mattox, was the brother of Hezekiah Lindsey. This has not been proved. Descendants of Hezekiah and Joshua Lindsey (born 1799, believed to be the grandson of William) have been tested in the Lindsay DNA project, and both are in Lindsay DNA Group 2.
