Wilson and Allied Families of Adair Co., KY / A letter from Betty Garmon on James B. Garmon Family.

Dear Carlis,

James Black Garmon was my great grandfather.  His son, William Britiney,  by his first wife, Margrette Callahan,
was my grandfather.  I do know James  Black was left handed as two of my children were.  My father was James
Bert Garmon and he was also left handed.  My grandfather and his family lived around the Burkeville area in
Kentucky but moved to Franklin, Tennessee  when my father was a young man.   My grandfather was the Sheriff
of Williamson County in Tennessee and my Dad was a deputy there.

I know I had a  picture of James Black Garmon but I have been looking everywhere and have not located it yet.
I may have sent it with my brother when he was here last Winter. I have placed and call and his wife is going to
have him look for it but he was not home.  I will continue to look for it also.

We lost one of our daughters alittle over a year ago.  We have six children. I went to see my sister who is living near Centerville or Duck River Tennessee and we then went up to Kentucky and look in some records.  I did find out that James Black was in the 5th Calvery for the Union Army.

My Dad had already told me earlier that he was in the Calvery.  My Dad said James Black taught him how to sight a rifle to shoot as they made my Dad switch to his right hand and after his grandfather taught him to sight he had no trouble shooting.  My Dad's oldest brother was named Nile Garmon and he still lived in Kentucky when he died.  He was a blacksmith.  My grandfather married Janie Hurt whose father was William Marshall Hurt.  They raised tobacco
in Kentucky and owed a large tobacco warehouse in Franklin, Tenn.  The rest of the family lived in Tennessee and California.
I will continue the search for that picture until I locate it so if you would send me your address I will mail a copy to you.  One of our sons has a digital camera and I might be able to have him send it over the e-mail.

My Dad also said James Black had a half brother named John who fought for the South but I cannot verify any of this but what my father told me.  I have never lived in Kentucky but was born in Franklin, Tenn and during World War II went to California where I had an Aunt Emma (Garmon) Wolfe and an Uncle Jack Garmon living there.  I lived there until I married a sailor and we did alot of traveling and ending up in Norman, Oklahoma.

My address is 1333 Dorchester, Norman, Ok  73069.  Our Phone number is (405) 329-9152.
I have one older sister, Barbara Derryberry, living in Tennessee, and three younger brothers, Jim, John and William living in California.
It has been nice corresponding with you and I will do my best to find that picture.

Betty Garmon Jewell
