FAMILY OF JOHN JACKSON (PEG LEG) LAWLEY AND CLARISSA COOK

JOHN JACKSON (PEG LEG) LAWLEY was born August 05, 1829 probably in St. Clair County, Alabama-his leg was cut off just above the ankle, and died July 06, 1901.  Didn't leave a will-buried Lawley's Chapel Cemetery, Dyke's Mill, Shelby Co. AL.  He married (1) CLARISSA COOK August 24, 1851 in St. Clair County, Alabama, daughter of ELIAS COOK and MARTHA PRAYTOR.  She was born April 02, 1827 in Alabama, and died July 27, 1881.  She is buried in Lawley Chapel Cemetery, Dyke's Mill, Shelby County, Alabama.  He married (2) ELIZABETH KENDRICK September 18, 1881 in St. Clair County, Alabama.  She died August 08, 1883.  He married (3) SARAH ROSA WILLIAMSON February 07, 1884 in Shelby County, Alabama.  She was born October 17, 1844, and died April 01, 1917 in Shelby County, Alabama.

Notes for JOHN JACKSON (PEG LEG) LAWLEY:

Information on this line from Joel Palmer ([email protected]) and Marlene Lawley.

Marlene writes - Clarissa died in 1881 and John married a woman much younger than him about 2 years later.  Pawpaw's information about this wife differs from what I've seen in others' research. He stated she outlived John and married a Davis.  He didn't know her name.  Because John Lawley did not leave a will, Mr. Davis took over the Lawley farm (about 70 acres) in Vincent, Alabama, and John's son hired a lawyer and tried to regain possession of their father's farm and livestock, but were not successful.

FROM STEPHEN BARBER'S SHELBY CO. CONFEDERATE SOLDERS:

Lawley, J.J. - 2nd sergeant - Co. I, 18th Alabama Infantry .   Received a pension in 1897 and 1898.  Lived at Harpersville.  Stated was wounded in the nose at Shiloh and in the right arm at Chickamauga.

LAWLEY-L: LAWLEY, John Jackson, 1829-1901 AL

Just found this Lawley mailing list and thought I would post our Lawleys.   This information comes from our PawPaw (John Richard Lawley) - Many years ago, he and I worked together to compile what he could remember before he died.  I realize there have been more Lawleys added to this list by other  researchers, but I am only submitting those names that he personally remembered (along with a few that I have learned of since then). If anyone sees any errors, thank you in advance for notifying me.  I'm also including some little "tidbits" such as where people lived and worked.  I have more information on some of the families - if you're interested in any particular family, please feel free to ask.

John Jackson Lawley (Pawpaw's grandfather), b. 8/5/1829, d. 7/6/1901 m. Clarissa Cook in 1851, daughter of Elias G. Cook who founded the Cook Springs resort in Cook Springs Alabama (people took vacation there to drink the mineral water, which was thought to be very healthy).  Clarissa was b. 4/2/1827, d. 6/27/1881.  John was called "Peg leg" because his leg was cut off just above the ankle (Pawpaw couldn't remember why).  Clarissa died in 1881, and John married a woman much younger than him about 2 years later.  Pawpaw's information about this wife differs from what I've  seen in other's research.  He stated that she outlived John and married a Davis.  He didn't know her name. Because John Lawley did not leave a will, Mr. Davis took over the Lawley farm (about 70 acres?) in Vincent, AL.  John's  sons hired a lawyer and tried to regain possession of their father's farm and livestock, but were not successful.

It is possible that Pawpaw did not realize there was another marriage between Clarissa and the lady who outlived John, especially since the 2nd wife only lived 2 years after she married John.  I assume that the 2nd wife was Elizabeth Kendrick (married 1881, died 1883), and that John married again 5 months later to Sara Williamson (who may be the one who later married a Davis).

John's and Clarissa's children (I have added those that I learned of later, which were not mentioned by Pawpaw):

1-William Washington Lawley 10/3/1852 - 2/2/1892 - Pawpaw couldn't know anything about William except that he thought he had a son named John who had a son named James who worked as a butcher for Hill Grocery in the early 1900's. But that could have been another William Lawley.

2-Robert Marion Lawley 10/8/1853 - 1/8/1854 (Pawpaw did not mention him.)

3-John Elias Lawley (Pawpaw's father) 12/22/1854 - 5/6/1916 (See next post for more information)

4-Female Infant b/d 5/18/1856 (Pawpaw did not mention her)

5-Henry Columbus Lawley 3/2/1857 - 5/16/1919 - Henry moved to Birmingham AL; married Carrie Dykes.  They had 3 boys and one girl: Willie was cashier at the Columbiana Bank, where Carrie's brother Jim was the President; Oscar was an engineer for the Sloss Company in Birmingham;  Rentie was the daughter; Fred worked for the Post Office until he went into the carnival business. He joined the Harrington Great Southern Shows as secretary and treasurer.  He eventually owned his own show; was married with one son.

6-James Lafayette Lawley 5/12/1860 - 10/5/1889 (Pawpaw did not mention him - died before he was born)

7-Jackson Felding Henly (or Henry) Lawley 2/11/1862 - 5/7/1888 (Pawpaw did not mention him- died before he was born)

8-Martha Elizabeth Lawley 3/10/1866 - 3/31/1887 (Pawpaw did not mention her- died before he was born)

9-Elisha Green Lawley 6/14/1868 - Elisha Green (called E.G.) was a piano salesman.  His wife's father owned May Real Estate and Insurance Company in Birmingham, AL..  E.G.'s children: Louis was a sign painter and died at the age of 23; Eugene became a doctor in Birmingham; Ellie Mae married a Hahan.  E.G.  Lawley remarried after first wife died - had two daughters - Clarissa and Martha.  2nd wife died in childbirth with Martha.  Henry Simmons Lawley (brother John's and Viola's son) adopted Martha; Clarissa was adopted by an aunt on her mother's side.  E.G. died a few years later.

10-George Lee 11/29/1870 - Pawpaw's notes are confusing here.  He said that Jack Lawley's youngest son.  Lee moved to Oklahoma and Texas around the age of 30.  It is believed that he married an Oklahoma girl and had one son.  He only returned home once for a visit.  However, on another page of Pawpaw's notes, he writes about a George that supposedly is brother to John Jackson Lee.  But I have not been able to find a brother by that name.  His notes about George Lawley - George Lawley was called "Doc" and lived in Sterrett, AL.  George and Georgie (or Georgiana) had 4 children: George Jr., Buster, Ellie, and Jack.  George Jr. moved to Brighton AL; his 2 sons worked for Woodward Iron Co - both were repairing a furnace when George Jr's son Forest fell off the furnace and was killed.  (Woodward Iron Co. eventually became TCI - US Steel in Birmingham).   Buster had lived in Pell City, AL; Ellie worked in Bessemer;  Jack worked in Birmingham.

11-Stillborn Female b/d 4/1873 (Pawpaw did not mention her)
