"I may as well say at once that all my researches fail to get one step beyond Henry Sewall, Alderman and twice Mayor of the city of Coventry, who is accepted as the ancestor of the Sewalls of New England and it is with him that this history must commence."
"The particular place of burial of Henry Sewall, viz. the Drapers' Chapel in St. Michael's Church, sufficiently indicates what was his business. ("Linen-draper" signifies a vendor of linen cloth-no more and no less.) That he had been successful in business his Will clearly shows. That he was a substantial man, and had acquired the respect and confidence of his fellow citizens, is ample proven by the facts that he was an Alderman down to his death, and had been twice Mayor of the city, viz. in 1589 and again in 1606."
