Some Descendants of Thomas BROWN & his sons, Thomas, John & Eleazer, of Stonington, Conn.

Fourth Generation

(Continued)

152. Peleg BROWN (Eleazer , Eleazer , Thomas ) was born 26 Sep 1744 in Stonington, New London Co., Connecticut and was christened 14 Nov 1736 in 1st Church of Stonington, Stonington, New London Co., Connecticut. He died 26 Jan 1814 in Bridgewater, Madison Co., New York and was buried in West Winfield Cemetery, West Winfield, Herkimer Co., New York.

Peleg was christened 16 Dec 1744 in Stonington, New London, CT.

Church: Peleg, son of Eleazer Brown and wife Mary, baptized 16 Dec. 1744.
Stonington vitals, both films: Born 26 Sept. 1744.
CT births: Born 26 Sept. 1744. Stonington vitals, v3, p69. [Doesn't jibe with tombstone. See Eleazer II notes for mention of this problem.]
History of Leyden: Peleg Brown was an early settler--"1st settler near W. Leyden mill site" on the River Road. Earliest he could have come to Leyden would be 1775, the book indicates. He was listed in the 1790 census for
Leyden, MA., and the 1800 New York census for Otsego County, NY. The area where he bought property in 1797 is now West Winfield, Herkimer County.
DAR cemetery list from Gen. Winfield Scott Chapter in 1928 says Peleg is buried in an old overgrown cemetery in the southern part of the town of Winfield, in a dense grove near the old Lewis Day homestead.
  Tombstone information:
Mr. Peleg Brown, d. Jan 26, 1814, ae 71 yrs.
Experience Brown, w. of Mr. Peleg Brown, d. June 16, 1852, ae 95 yrs.
[This indicates Peleg was born about 1742. Brown says he was born 26 Sept. 1744, and Wheeler says 26 Sept. 1749. Various vitals say 1744 and church baptismal date is 14 Dec. 1744. This indicates the tombstone age of
death is off a couple of years.
[Peleg has been confused with Peleg Brown of Stonington (not North Stonington), a native of Rhode Island who married Mercy/Marcy Denison. This Peleg, who died 13 April 1796, was an officer during the Revolutionary War, while my Peleg was a private.]
Also buried in West Winfield is son Eleazer Brown III, who died in 1866, and his wife, Martha "Patty" Clark, who died in 1825.  Eleazer III and Experience were named to administer Peleg's will. In 1810 Peleg apparently had three sons at home: two 16-26 and one 26, according to the census that year.

The cemetery property is now owned by the Tennessee Gas Co. It has been cleared of all but one tombstone, Peleg's. His was left at the insistence of the DAR because he was a Revolutionary War veteran, the town historian said. Peleg  served only a six-month hitch, July 1 to Dec. 31, 1780, in the 5th Connecticut Regiment, Capt. Joseph Wright's company. Peleg was a private.
The Continental Army Linages book says the 5th Connecticut was in the 2nd Connecticut Brigade when the brigade was relieved Nov. 27, 1780, from the Main Army and assigned to the Highlands Department. Perhaps this is why Peleg was mustered out early on Dec. 13, 1780.
Record of Services: List of levies in the 5th Regiment, Connecticut Line, in 1780 says Peleg Brown enlisted 1 July 1780 and was discharged 13 Dec. 1780.
Land records say three sons--Benjamin F. Brown (wife Polly), Gustavus A. Brown (wife Sophonia), and Jessie* Brown (wife Hannah)--along with wife Experience sold some of Peleg's property after his death. This indenture very confusing re Gustavus' name. First mention says Gustavus A., second says Augustus A. and the third Gustavus A. again. Brown Genealogy, Vol. II, says his name is Adolphus. Also mentioned in the indenture is Benjamin F. Brown, while B.G. says Franklin. Assume the names are Gustavus Adolphus Brown and
Benjamin Franklin Brown.

*In other sources all references are to various Jesse Browns.

The Eleazer Brown in Winfield "in 1792" (cited in History of Herkimer County, 1879) has to be  Peleg's son, Eleazer III. The date must be an error. Timothy Smith's book, "An Intimate History of Winfield", says Eleazer III came to W.W. about 1800. He would have been about 21 then. Harden's History of Herkimer County says Eleazer was one of the first settlers in West Winfield. Both history books and Brown Genealogy, Vol. II, say Eleazer III had a son Hiram, a grandson Hiram C. and a great-grandson H.C. Brown.
Peleg's half-brother, Elder Eleazer, was 21 years older than Peleg, never moved to New York and died in 1795. Therefore, he could not be the 1792 Eleazer. He was minister of the First Baptist Church in Stonington.
His son, Elder Eleazer Brown, also a minister, moved to Brookfield (which is near West Winfiedl and now is in Madison Co.), N.Y., and fathered a distinguished line.
Lineage Book XXVI, National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, Page 161, says Peleg and Experience were married Dec. 14, 1802. Must be an error since their third child was born in 1770 or 1775 and first
child was named Experience, making it improbable that Experience was Peleg's second wife.
Film 1,023,771: Sale of land Dec. 7, 1797, by Thomas R. Clark of Richfield, Otsego County, N.Y., to Peleg Brown, Richfield, for $1,050. The 107 acres, located in Richfield, was part of the Schuyler Patent and Morgan's Purchase.
Before 1816 the territory now embracing the town of West Winfield was a part of the towns of Richfield and Plainfield, Otsego County. In 1816 county boundary lines were changed and West Winfield wound up in Herkimer County. This makes land sale records confusing. A sale executed in Otsego County before the 1816 change often was not recorded until many years later--in Otsego County. So a sale of property in Otsego county in 1815 would be recorded in 1820 in Otsego County records even though the property was then in Herkimer County.

Checking records in Leyden involves several jurisdictions. Leyden originally was in Bernardston, but it was set off as the town of Leyden in 1784. At that time it was in Hampshire County, Mass. In 1811, however, Franklin County, was formed from Hampshire County, with Leyden winding up in Franklin County.
History of the Town of Bernardston, Vol. 1, p252 (974.22/Bl, H2h): Elisha Clarke and Peleg Brown appeared on the Bernardston town rate in 1781--each one poll., and each living in the area that later became Leyden.

Peleg married Experience MORGAN, daughter of Timothy MORGAN Sr. and Deborah LEEDS "Polly", about 1770. Experience was born 22 Jul 1749 in Groton, New London Co., Connecticut. She died 1845 in Bridgewater, Madison Co., New York and was buried in West Winfield Cemetery, West Winfield, Herkimer Co., New York.

Genealogical and Biographical Record of New London County, Conn., and A History of James Morgan say Experience was born July 22, 1749. This does not jibe with info on headstone as reported in DUP reading. Based on above date, she would have been 102 at time of death. The tombstone information is corroborated by info on a bronze plaque placed at the site of the graveyard. However, the Fairfield man who made her coffin says in his records she died June 11, 1843. This would place her birth at 1747, much closer to the above. He had the right date for Eleazer III's death. (Film 836,759, Page 266). I'll go with the coffin maker. At least I know he was right once. Another source says born 22 July 1756.
  DUP record from 1928 says:
Buried on the old West Winfield family farm. (It is now Tenneco property.)
Headstone says: Experience Brown, w. of Mr. Peleg Brown, d. June 16, 1852, ae 95 yrs.

Third child, John Brown, was born 1770 (B.G.) or 1775 (DAR record). Latter seems most probable, since next two were born in 1776 and 1779. Assuming first child was born 1771 and second in 1773, then marriage would be about 1770--otherwise would be about five years earlier.

Experience Brown was named in the will of her father, dated 6 Jan. 1794, so she had to have been married before then.
She probably was named after her aunt, Experience Morgan, sister of Timothy.

They had the following children:

Gustavus Adolphus BROWN was born about 1789 in Leyden, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts.

From Brown Genealogy, Vol. II. He is also mentioned in record of sale of his
late father's land by him and his mother, Experience Morgan Brown. The land sale
record says his wife was Sophonia or Saphonia.

From the Western Advertiser and Freeman's Journal (Film 924,751) reporting
Otsego County marriages: On May 25, 1829, at Richfield, a Sophonia Brown married
Nelson Morgan. She possibly the widow or daughter of Gustavus A. Brown?

Gustavus married Sophonia.

Mentioned as wife of G.A. Brown in a land sale record from Herkimer County,
New York. Name could be Saphonia. The record was hard to read.
