    He was educated in the public schools and at Wabash College, Crawfordsville, Indiana. He has lived in Wilmington, Kankakee, Chicago, and Hoopeston, in Illinois. He was a farmer, but is not now in business. He has been a postmaster, Deputy County Clerk, Deputy County Treasure, Town Collector, and Town Assessor. He is a Republican. He now is and his wife was a member of the Episcopal Church.

Hiram married Susie D. BARNARD, daughter of O. F. H. BARNARD and Susan RANSOM, on 4 Feb 1862 in Williamsville, Erie Co., New York. Susie was born 2 Jan 1842 in Williamsville, Erie Co., New York.

3176. Walter Wilson TODD (Lydia CHURCH , Lydia BABCOCK , Sarah BROWN , Ichabod , John , Thomas ) was born 27 Feb 1840 in Rockville, Illinois. He died 18 Oct 1899 in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois.

    He was educated at Racine, Wisconsin, and Aurora, Illinois. At the age of twenty-one he enlisted in the 4th Illinois Cavalry. In June, 1862, he raised a company in his old neighborhood, of which he was elected Captain. This was Co. I of the 76th Illinois. He was elected Major by the officers of the regiment in July, 1863; in 1864 was appointed Inspector General and Chief of Infantry of 2nd Division of 19th Army Corps, and later Inspector-General of the 2nd Division; was relieved at his own request at Ft. Gaines, Alabama, when he was given command of the regiment. He was discharged Aug. 4, 1865. He lived for a short time in Rockville; was County Treasurer of Kankakee Co., Illinois, for six years from 1900; was cashier of customs at chicago at the time of his death. He was a Republican, and he and his wife were members of the Presbyterian Church.

Walter married Asenath GERARD, daughter of Isaac GERARD and Maria, on 19 Nov 1895 in Westchester, Ohio. Asenath was born 9 Nov 1844 in Newton, Ohio. She died 16 Dec 1895 in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois.

    He was educated in the common schools, and afterwards taught very successfully an ungraded school of over one hundred pupils. He studied medicine with Dr. E. King, of Unadilla Forks, NY, and graduated from the Medical Department of the University of New York in 1848. He located, immediately after his marriage, at Cooksville, Rock Co., Wisconsin, but shortly afterwards removed to the larger town of Stoughton, Wis., where he soon obtained a practice which taxed his robust constitution to the utmost.
    He became a man of great influence in his community, and was elected to the State Legislature of Wisconsin in 1859, 1860 and 1864. In 1867, desiring larger opportunities, he removed to W. Mitchell, Iowa, then the countyseat and a very flourishing town, and at once took a leading part in the development of the town. He opened a drug store, expecting to retire from the practice of medicine; but the demand fro his services was so great that he was soon in active practice, and did not cease until well along in years. He took an active interest in politics, and in 1872-1873 served in the lower house of the Iowa Legislature. In 1878 he was chosen to fill the vacancy in the State Senate caused by the death of Judge Arad Hitchcock. He was a member of the American Medical Association, being a delegate to the National Association in 1873.
     In 1891 he removed to Osage, and purchased a fine residence, where he resided until his death. Here, with a large gathering of their friends, he and his wife celebrated their golden wedding, although at the time he was in failing health. He was a man of great energy and force of character, always faithful to all interests committed to his care. He was of rugged frame, and although at times brusk and abrupt, he had a kind heart and was always good to the poor, visiting them frequently without charge. After her husband's death Mrs. Blackman lived with her daughter, surviving her husband about two years and a half.

Mary married Hiram Rantsford COATS, son of Ransford COATS and Betsey BROWN, on 26 Jun 1855 in Unadilla Forks, New York. Hiram died 9 Mar 1896 in Hamilton, New York.

   He was a wagon-maker and a first-class mechanic; was of a roving disposition, and is said to have seen the country from ocean to ocean, and from Canada to the equator. They lived at different times in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Kansas, but finally settled down on a small fruit farm near Hamilton, NY. Both were members of the Congregational Church at Mound City, Kansas. She was a woman of varied accomplishments, giving lessons in music and painting in the various places into which her husband's wanderings took her, having had a class of thirty pupils in Rochester, NY.

3191. Nathaniel Otis MC COLLUM (Mercy BROWN , Asa , Asa , Ichabod , John , Thomas ) was born 4 Oct 1823 in Richfield, Otsego Co., New York. He died 3 Feb 1886.

   He was a wholesale paper-dealer in Buffalo. He became financially involved through the fault of others, but bore his misfortunes bravely, and later was in the livery business. He was a man greatly liked; was a Republican in politics, and a Mason; was a man of great public spirit and on of the leading promoters of the Buffalo Driving Park. His wife was a devoted Episcopalian, and one of the efficient managers of the Church Home.

Nathaniel married Laura Ann FRINK on 29 Sep 1852. Laura was born 1826 in Fredonia, New York. She died 1876 in Buffalo, New York.
