Editor's notes are my additions based on reports people have given me or I have researched - Wes Coleman

(409) Lewis Washington Coleman, or Lute, was born 3/23/1844, in what was then Bledsoe County, TN, in the present county of Sequatchie somewhere in the vicinity of Lewis Chapel and Flat Top Mountain communities.  He lived on the mountain as a boy moving with his family off the mountain and into the valley to Retro (now Bakewell), TN, in the 1850's.

Lewis Washington, known as Lute, lived in Bakewell with his family and helped farm until the outbreak of the Civil War.

He joined the Union Army with his father on 2/10/1862, at Flat Lick, Kentucky.  He was a little over a month away from his 18th birthday when he enlisted for a period of three years.

Lute and his father were mustered in the 3rd Tennessee Volunteer Infantry, Company H. under the command of General J. O. Spears, and were transferred to Portland, Ohio where he remained with the company until they began a march through the Cumberland Gap in East Tennessee and fought in the battle of Pine Mountain, TN, on 09/08/1862.

His company evacuated Cumberland Clap and on 9/22/1862, Lute was reported as leaving sick at Manchester, Kentucky.  This coincided with his father's departure due to illness the same day.  His father was subsequently captured by Confederate forces but there are no records in Lute's service record that indicates anything other than he was sick.

His records indicate that he did not rejoin the company until 9/25/1863, at which time he was charged with being absent without leave and was brought before a court martial of which there are no records of any results of the court martial.

It should be stated in defense of Lute and other family members who fought in the Civil War, that records were not well kept during the Civil War and even though his service record states he was absent without leave for over a year apparently any discrepancies or absences were clarified and justified due to the fact that in Lute's obituary when he died it states that an honorable discharge from the U. S. Army for service in the Civil War was one of his most prized possessions.

After Lute rejoined his company he remained with them through late September and October and participated in maneuvers around Chattanooga, TN, and between Chattanooga and Sale Creek, TN.  While encamped at Sale Creek Lute was given an authorized leave of absence by General Spears due to sickness on 10/28/1853.  This coincides with an authorized leave of absence Lute's father received at the same time.  It could have been that Lute's father was authorized a leave of absence due to Lute's illness.  Nevertheless being close to home Lute and his father apparently went back to Bakewell for the winter.

Lute is shown as being absent on all the company muster sheets in 1864, however there must be a discrepancy somewhere as he is shown on a muster out sheet in Nashville, TN, on 2/23/1865.  With no record of his whereabouts in 1864, it is impossible to tell what action he saw in the war during that year.

As mentioned Lute was mustered out of the Army at Nashville and the records indicate he was due $100 dollars pay.  The records also indicate he was discharged due to expiration of term of service.

Lute and his father returned to Bakewell and farming when the war was over.  Lute began several years of community service April of 1868, when he was elected Constable of the 12th District of Hamilton County, TN, a post which he held for 12 years.

He married Jane Early Hughes on 12/15/1868, in Hamilton County, TN.  Jane was born 01/?/1842, in Tennessee.  She was the daughter of J. F. and Sarah Early, residents of Soddy, TN.  There is conflicting testimony conerning her.  She was the widow of a man named Hughes when she married 'Lute' Coleman.  However, there is one report that he was a confederate officer killed in the Civil War and another that he died in Andersonville Prison as a union soldier.  Also, this man Hughes may have been William Hughes, who was the son of Lute Coleman's grandfather, Hezekiah Hughes, making him Lute's uncle.

On 02/15/1869, Lute's grandfather, Hezikiah Hughes, deeded him 350 acres of land in the "Old 12th District" of Hamilton County.  I do not know exactly where this land was located but as far as I know, Lute lived near Soddy, TN most of his married life somewhere around the present site of Soddy Lake.  He acquired one other large tract of land on 9/16/1892, when he bought 164 acres from J. W. Clift in Soddy.  Most other transactions were of a minor nature involving small tracts of land, mostly with family members such as his brother Ben, and his father-in-law.  He sold the 164 acres he bought from Clift on 12/09/1909.

Lute was a farmer most of his life while in Soddy.  He also served as the Postmaster at Soddy for a number of years and was a Mason while there.  He and his family were members of the Presbyterian Church; possibly the Soddy Presbyterian Church as he had two children buried in the Soddy Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Lute and his wife moved west to Post, Texas in 1916.  Most of his children had already moved out there a few years before.  They established a farm on the prairie of the Texas panhandle.

Jane died in Post, Texas in 1920 at the age of 78.  She was buried in Post.  Lute continued to farm for several years but eventually retired and established residence with a daughter-in-law and her family in Post.

Lute remained active up until he became ill about 4 months before he died.  Lute passed away 12/30/1938, in Post, Texas, at the age of 94 years, 9 months and 7 days.  He was buried in Terrace Cemetery, in Post, Texas.

In 1895 or 1896 he moved to Scurry County, Texas to work as a carpenter building homes on farms as the area was just beginning to become well populated.  He boarded with the Davis family of Snyder, Texas while residing in Scurry County.

John was set to enlist in the Army in 1898 when the Spanish-American War broke out but was stricken with typhoid fever and was unable to join.  His mother had to come from Soddy and helped nurse him back to health.  He returned to Soddy to complete his recovery and then returned to Snyder and met Maggie Mae Mason whom he married on 12/4/1901.

John and his family moved back to Texas in 1910 to a new prarie town called Post which was just being developed.  Much building was going on at that time and carpenters were in demand.  He built many of the homes in the town of Post and later several homes on the prarie after it was opened for settlement.

John and his family moved in 1912 to the plains near Double U Commissary and then bought a farm in the Graham community in 1914.  John served as the Garza County Treasurer from 1916 to 1918.
