(410) Millie America Coleman (Barnes) was born 6/29/1846, on Walden's Ridge in what was then Bledsoe County, between the settlements of Lewis Chapel, TN, and Flat Top Mountain, TN. She was the last child of Benjamin Franklin Coleman and Nancy Hughes Coleman.  As a young girl she moved with her family to Bakewell, TN

Her teenage years would be hard for her.  Her mother died when she was 13 [1859 or 60, ed.].  Her father remarried the following year [1860/1] and then two years later [1862/3], following the outbreak of the Civil War, she saw her father and both brothers leave home to fight in the war leaving her alone with her step-mother and an infant half-sister to take care of home and farm.  Millie was a gentle but tough person and made it through the ordeal.

She married George Robert Barnes on 11/11/1873, in Hamilton County, TN.  Bob was born 10/11/1849, the son of James and Nancy Barnes of Bakewell.

Bob and Millie lived in Bakewell.  Bob was a farmer and well known citizen of the Bakewell community.  Their house in Bakewell stood across from a tavern on Hiway 27, between the Big Opposum and Little Opposum creeks.  This house was torn down during the winter of 1983- 1984.  Bob died on 11/22/1899, at the age of 50.  He was buried in the Gray Cemetery, Bakewell.

Millie continued to live in Bakewell for the rest of her life.  She was always a very active woman and continued to be so almost up to the end of her life.  At age 98 she still tended to her self, cooked and worked in her flower garden.  Millie died on 9/1/1946, in Bakewell at the age of 100 years, 2 months and 3 days.  She was buried in the Gray Cemetery in Bakewell.

On the morning of 3/30/1908, Jim arose around 5:00 A.M.  He decided to let his wife sleep a little later so he got up and proceeded to build a fire in the cookstove in the kitchen and prepare breakfast.  The children awoke when he got up and came into the kitchen with him.  The fire did not start easily and he got a can of kerosene or some type of combustible liquid to pour on it and help it along. Just as he was pouring the liquid on the fire it ran up the stream and into the can exploding in his hand and completely engulfing him and his daughter in flames. He and his daughter were burnt over their entire bodies.  Little Marguerite, who was only 3 years old, died that afternoon.  Somehow Jim lingered on through the night and died the following morning.  He and his daughter were buried together on 4/2/1908, in Forest Hills Cemetery, Chattanoaoga, TN.  His wife Eva, grief stricken, lived only a few months after the accident.  Their son, Hayden, only 5 years old at the time of the accident, suffered irrepairable brain damage when his father tried to push him away from the flames and he hit his head on a door facing.  Hayden died around 1919.
