[Carroll Co., TN, Book J, pg 8] I Enoch Humphrey for the love and affection I [entertain] for my mother Elizabeth Humphrey I do hereby give Transfer and Convey to her, My Tract of land in Carroll County Tennessee District No. 8 containing by estimation Ninety acres and Bounded as follows viz Beginning on a Stake in Little Reedy Creek Maple dogwood & Sasafras poles a NW Corner of Jesse Giles Survey on the Sounth Boundary of Entry No 860 in the name of Henry Mathis Runs with said line S 63° west 61 poles to a stake Spanish Oak & hickory poles Thence S 31° East 36 poles to a stake with small black oak and Dogwood pointers Thence west 8 poles to a wild cherry Tree with pointers a NW Corner of Said Mathis entry No 455 then South 42 poles to a Stake with small black oak & hickory pointers Thence with an agreed line 66° west 44 poles to a Stake with Black oak & hickory pointers Thence west 40 poles to a red Oak with pointers Thence South 87 poles to a white oak with pointers Thence an agreed line at 70° East [202] poles to a stake in little Reedy creek with hickory cherry & poplar pointers Thence down said Creek as it meanders a NW Direction 103 poles to the Beginning to have and to hold the same to the said E. [Carroll Co., TN Book M pg 578.] I Jesse Giles have this day bargained & sold & do hereby transfer & convey to Enoch & Joseph Humphrey & their heirs forever for the consideration Eighty six dollars & fifty cts to me paid a tract of land in the state of Tennessee Carroll County & District No 8 Containing by estimation about 50 acres be the same more or less and bounded as follows Beginning on a stake in little Ready Creek with Maple Dogwood & Sassafras ptrs: Said Enoch Humphreys N. Lacy 02 Feb 1857 [Carroll Co., TN Book M, pgs 211-12] (I don't know who James Humphrey is....could it be a relative of Elizabeth or perhaps the family of Martha (Patsey) who married Richard Leigh? I have a note that James H was md 06 Apr 1848 to Martha Black. They are in the 1850 census, house # 1038, page 158. Elizabeth Humphrey w/Mary Green was house #1045.) Know all men by these presents that I James H Humphrey for and in consideration of the sum of five dollars to me in hand paid by Joseph P Lacy both of the county of Carroll & state of Tennessee the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged have bargained & sold & do by these presents bargain sell & convey unto the said Joseph P Lacy his heirs & assigns a certain tract or parcel of land lying & being in the county of Carroll on the waters of [Reedy] Creek in Range 3 & Section 2 being part of Entry no 5911 for 88 3/4 acres of land bounded as follows to wit begining in the extreme south west corner of said Entry & runs E 93 poles to a black gum with ptrs then N 10 poles to a stake in a branch with ptrs then down said branch with its meanderings in a N E direction 62 poles to a small black oak with post oak & black Jack ptrs then S 37 poles to a small black oak with post oak ptrs then west 91 poles to a small white oak with ptrs then South 75 poles to a small persimmon sapling with small [??] on Red & black oak pointers the begining to have & to hold to the said land & also one clock, one Bed & furniture consisting of six quilts two good counterpains two pillows two sheets & [such] to have and hold to the said Joseph P Lacy his heirs & assings forever. I do covenant with the said Joseph P Lacy that I am lawfully seized & possessed of said land & property & have a good right to convey it and do hereby bind myself my heirs & Representatives to forever warrent & defend the same to the said Joseph P Lacy his heirs & assigns forever. But this deed is made for the following use & trust & for no other purpose, that is to say that I am endebted to Margaret Churchwell to the amt of Sixty dollars in note under seal of this date to be paid about the first day of October 1857. Now if I should fail to pay said debt & the cost then & in that case the said Joseph P Lacy as trustie shall after giving ten days notice one at the court house door in the town of Huntingdon then other public places in the neighborhood of said land and [??] sell the same at the court house door in the town of Huntingdon to the highest bidder for cash and after paying said debt & expenses in which this is given to secure pay the [can't read the rest]. Harrison 01 Oct 1857 [Carroll Co., TN Book M, pgs 440-41] (It never gives the first name of J. H. Humphrey, but I assume from the description of the land that it is the same as the previous James.) The [indenture?] made and entered into on the 1st day of October 1857 by and between J H Humphrey of the County of Carroll and State of Tennessee of the one part and B F Harrison of the County of Carroll and State aforesaid of the other part Witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum of One Hundred and Sixty Dollars to me in hand paid the receipt whereof is here by acknowledged I have bargained & sold and do hereby transfer and convey unto B F Harrison his heirs & c a certain piece or parcel of land lying and being in the County of Carroll and State of Tennessee in the 8th Civil District on the waters of Ready Creek & bounded as follows in Range 3 & Section 2 being part of Entry No 5911 for 88 3/4 acres in the name of Jacob Black and bounded as follows to wit beginning on the extreme south west corner of said Entry & runs E 93 poles to a black gum with pointers thence North 10 poles to a stake in a branch with pointers then down said branch with its meanderings in a North East direction 62 poles to a maple with white oak post oak and hickory pointers thence South 39 poles to a small black oak with post oak pointers then west 91 poles to a small white oak with ptrs then South 75 poles to a small persimmon sapling with small [percinmon?] on Red & black oak pointers the beginning containing Seventy acres more or less To have and to hold the said bargained and described premises together with the handiments & appertences therewith belonging or in any wise appertaining to the said B F Harrison to him his heirs and assigns forever I covenant with the said B F Harrison that I am lawfully seized of said land and bargained premises and have a good right to convey the same and that the same is unencumbered I further convenant and bind myself my heirs & c to warrant and forever defend the title of the said land to the said B F Harrison his heirs & c against the legal claim of all and every person whatever In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal the day and date above written.
