New Orleans (Orleans Parish) Louisiana Newspapers New Orleans, as one of the largest cities in the United States in the 19th century, had a variety of political, geographic, and ethnic communities. For this reason, there were many newspapers that served the city throughout its history. Newspapers are an important source for obituaries and death notices as well as news articles. This page presents information on finding New Orleans newspapers online and on microfilm. Online sources for The Times-Picayune The most important newspaper in the history of New Orleans is The Times-Picayune (previously known as The Daily Picayune). For many years it served as the "newspaper of record" for the city. Various years of the newspaper are available from different sources. GenealogyBank (fee-based) has The Times-Picayune, 1837-1988, and many other New Orleans newspapers. These are scans of the original newspapers. More recent issues of The Times-Picayune are available through the Louisiana Library Connection. These are individual articles. It can be accessed online IF you have a Louisiana library card number. The site includes articles and “Funeral Notices” (usually those that required payment) that appeared in The Times-Picayune from 1 January 1989 to the present time. Note: Individuals who do not live in or own property in the [New Orleans] Metropolitan area can get an NOPL card by paying a fee of $50.00 for an individual or $100.00 for a family. These cards are good for one year and entitle their holders to the same privileges as resident card holders.
