      2.  John Newton2 Sowell, Sr. (John1) was born 1780 in Rutherford Co., NC, and died May 10, 1838 in Gonzales Co., TX.  He married Rachel Sarah Carpenter Abt. 1808 in Davidson Co., TN, daughter of John Carpenter.  She was born 1785 in Hart Co., KY, and died Abt. 1860 in Seguin, Guadalupe Co., TX.

-- FACT #1 - 1: Moved to Gonzales, TX in 1829 as part of the DeWitt Colony.  Made the Bowie Knife for Jim Bowie.

-- FACT #1 - 2: John Sowell was a gunsmith and blacksmith in Gonzales, TX when a skirmish broke out between the settlers with a small cannon the Mexicans had given the town and came to retrieve.  The villagers wouldn't give it up.  Thus the first flag, "Come and Take It".

Sowell, who died at Lynchburg, TX July 20, 1899 and was laid to rest in the San Jacinto Cemetery, was a native of TN but came to TX with his step-father, Humphrey Branch in 1829 and with him and his grandfather, Mr. John Sowell, settled on the Guadalupe River where Seguin is now located in 1831.

-- FACT #1b -: In 1957 the State of Texas paid tribute to Andrew Jackson Sowell and John N. Sowell by erecting State Markers at each front corner of the Sowell burial plot in San Geronimo Cemetery.

-- FACT #1 -:  He had not reached his eighth birthday when he arrived in Texas with his parents.  At age seventeen, with his big brothers Andrew and John, he joined Matthew Caldwell' "Gonzales Rangers."

Fact #2 -: In March, 1845 it is said that Asa and Calvin S. Turner were hired by Prince Solms to guide the German settlers to their land on the Comal River, where later was founded the town of New Braunfels.

Fact #3 -: Asa served as district clerk in 1846 and as chief justice from 1870 to 1874 in Guadalupe County.  He also was Justice of the Peace in Seguin, TX.
