2. DUNCAN2 MACNIVEN (MALCOLM1) was born in Cargostan, Scotland. He married FLORA CAMPBELL, daughter of COLIN CAMPBELL and MARY MCCARTY.

Duncan was a fisherman until he met Flora Campbell, who would not marry him until he would give up the sea.

The family of Campbell, from whence she came, was among the earliest of Scottish clans. She was apparently descended directly from a younger son of Archibald Campbell, Duke of Argyle.

After the marriage of Duncan MacNiven and Flora Campbell, they moved to Bowmore, where he engaged in farming.

They had one son, Daniel Grossman MacNiven born at Bowmore, June 21, 1766, and died January 5, 1867 at Monticello, N.Y. . It is not clear exactly what Daniel's name was. In the testimonial provided for him in Scotland, his name appears as "Donald," but according to the Nevin Genealogica, "Daniel" and "Donald" were the same.

When 23 years of age, he determined to leave Scotland for the New World. He landed in New York in 1765 and entered business. When the war broke out, he joined the Rebel Cause, and was commissioned as captain of Engineers in the Revolutionary Army. While in the Army, he dropped the Mac from his name. He continued with the army until it was disbanded in Newburgh, N.Y.

He was twice married. His first wife was named ELEANOR, and she was buried with her children in the Scotch Church cemetary, in Cedar Street, New York City.

Daniel's second wife was JANE WALLACE, of New York. She was born in 1765 and died in 1819.
