Generation No. 3

5. DANIEL3 MACNIVEN (DUNCAN2, MALCOLM1) was born 6/12/1766 in Bowmore, and died 1/5/1867 in Monticello, NY.

Malcolm MacNiven's son Duncan married Florn, daughter of Captain Colin Campbell and his wife Mary McCarty, and moved from Cargostan to Bowmore, where their son Daniel MacNiven was born 12 June 1766. Daniel decided to go to American, and landed in New York 16 April 1791, and visited his uncle Daniel Niven Sr. in Newburgh and then returned to New York where he was in the merchant tailoring business until 1799 when he returned to Newburgh and continued in the same line until 1810. He again returned to New York and then to Wurtsboro where he bought a property and kept an inn.

He was married by Rev. John McMann, D.D. in the City of New York, 24 April 1798, to Ann Van Riper, daughter of John Van Riper and Catherine (Catharine) Post. Ann died at the age of 87. Daniel Niven died 5 January 1867, aged 100 years 6 months and 23 days. At the time of his death he was perhaps the oldest Free Mason in America, having joined the fraternity in Scotland in 1788.        (From the Manuscript of the Rev. Duncan C. Niven, in Nevin Genealogica and the similar material in Betty Niven's notebook.)

After his death this was found among his papers:

"That the bearer hereof Donald macNiven lawful son of Duncan MacNiven and Florence Campbell in Bowmore, Island of Islay was born and hitherto mostly lived in this our Parish, always behaving himself civilly, honestly and inoffensively, free of public scandal or ground of church censure. Note, whereas he now intends leaving the country there is no reason why he may not be received into any Christian Society where Providence may order his lot.
Attested at Bomore, 14 February 1791
By John Murdock, Min.
Aleser MacEonne, Elder.
Donald Adair, Elder.

Also:

The above Donald MacNiven was naturalized in the Court of Common Pleas of the County of Orange on the first Tuesday of September, One thousand eight hundred and two.
Per Curiam
Hopkins, Clerk.

(Note the spelling of Duncan's wife's name. In Betty's book and in family history, she is called Flora, and Betty's mother was named for her. Also note that in Scotland Daniel was called "Donald". According to the Nevin Genealogica, the two are exactly equivalent.)
