	Generation No. 5     21. DUNCAN CAMPBELL5 NIVEN (DANIEL GOSSMAN4, DANIEL GOSSMAN3 MACNIVEN, DUNCAN2, MALCOLM1) was born 9/18/1829 in Newburgh, NY, and died in Monticello, NY. He married AUGUSTA THOMPSON ECKER 4/26/1853. She died 5/26/1907. Duncan was a lawyer, and later became a minister in five churches. He wrote the manuscript which is quoted in the Nevin Genealogica. He was the grandson of the Daniel born on Islay who came to America (the one listed here as Daniel GOSSMAN Sr.), the greatgrandson of Duncan, and the greatgreatgrandson of Malcolm. He was Betty Niven's first cousin once removed. His father Daniel GOSSMAN and Thomas Helm were brothers. She married NERVILLE W. WHITE 1/3/1866. He died 1/15/1895.     Child of PHOEBE NIVEN and NERVILLE WHITE is: i. NERVILLE W.6 WHITE, JR., d. 10/3/1871.     23. RHODA ANN5 BROWNSON (CATHARINE POST4 NIVEN, DANIEL GOSSMAN3 MACNIVEN, DUNCAN2, MALCOLM1) was born 8/13/1821 in MONTICELLO, and died 12/5/1916. She married JAMES A. DUNCAN about 1850. MARY NIVEN5 BROWNSON (CATHARINE POST4 NIVEN, DANIEL GOSSMAN3 MACNIVEN, DUNCAN2, MALCOLM1) was born 12/1828 in MONTICELLO, and died 8/25/1894. She married JOHN SMITH BRADLEY, JR. 6/8/1848.     Children of MARY BROWNSON and JOHN BRADLEY are: i. MARY ELLA6 BRADLEY, b. 6/19/1849. 49.ii. JOHN SMITH BRADLEY III, b. 6/15/1852.     26. CATHARINE SARAH5 BROWNSON (CATHARINE POST4 NIVEN, DANIEL GOSSMAN3 MACNIVEN, DUNCAN2, MALCOLM1) was born 3/16/1839 in Monticello, and died 5/31/1910. She married the Rev. GEORGE AUSTIN PELTON 4/27/1864. He was born about 1831 (Yale '61), and died 10/4/1914 at age 83.     Child of CATHARINE BROWNSON and GEORGE PELTON is: i. THORNTON AUGUSTUS THOMPSON5 NIVEN (ARCHIBALD CAMPBELL4, DANIEL GOSSMAN3 MACNIVEN, DUNCAN2, MALCOLM1) was born 12/3/1841 in Newburgh, NY, and died 1905. He married PLUMA A. TREMAIN, daughter of ISRAEL P. TREMAIN. She was born 2/10/1843, and died 2/20/1912.     Child of THORNTON NIVEN and PLUMA TREMAIN is: i. JENNIE LEE6 NIVEN, b. 1867, Monticello; d. 6/8/1927; m. JOHN FORSYTHE6 NIVEN.     30. THORNTON MACNESS5 NIVEN, JR. (THORNTON MACNESS4, DANIEL GOSSMAN3 MACNIVEN, DUNCAN2, MALCOLM1) was born 8/23/1836 in Newburgh. He married ELIZABETH WILSON LEWIS 6/1/1870. In the Civil War, he was chaplain in "Stonewall" Jackson's Division. He was Pastor of Presbyterian Church in Dobb's Ferry, NY, for thirty-four years.     Children of THORNTON NIVEN and ELIZABETH LEWIS are: i. MARY6 NIVEN.     32. WILLIAM BEATTIE5 NIVEN (JAMES4, DANIEL GOSSMAN3 MACNIVEN, DUNCAN2, MALCOLM1) was born 12/13/1847 in Cuylerville. He married CORNELIA A. DILL 1/23/1878.     Children of WILLIAM NIVEN and CORNELIA DILL are: i. HELEN CAMPBELL6 NIVEN, b. 11/10/1878. Trained in New York Presbyterian Hospital, she was a district nurse in New York City ii. KANE; d. 12/15/1941.     33. ALEXANDER HAMILTON5 ODELL (MARY SCOTT4 NIVEN, DANIEL GOSSMAN3 MACNIVEN, DUNCAN2, MALCOLM1) was born 11/4/1834. He married ELIZABETH A. PINCKLEY HAMMOND 10/27/1868. Alexander was a lawyer in New York City.     Child of ALEXANDER ODELL and ELIZABETH HAMMOND is: i. HAMMOND6 ODELL, b. 1869; d. 1908.     34. HELEN EDITH5 ODELL (MARY SCOTT4 NIVEN, DANIEL GOSSMAN3 MACNIVEN, DUNCAN2, MALCOLM1) was born 1/2/1836. She married ARTHUR ARNOLD BARROWS 1875. He never practiced medicine; he taught singing in New York City schools. Died June 1908.     Child of HELEN ODELL and ARTHUR BARROWS is: i. MAI CAMPBELL6 BARROWS, b. 6/4/1877; d. 10/3/1956, New York; m. WALTER ADAMS EVANS, 1924, England; d. 1938.     35. FLORA CAMPBELL5 NIVEN (THOMAS HELM4, DANIEL GOSSMAN3 MACNIVEN, DUNCAN2, MALCOLM1) was born 7/22/1847 in Wilmington, Delaware, and died 1/21/1935 in Upper Montclair, N.J.. She married CHARLES W. ABRAMS 9/7/1871 in Hoboken, NJ. Flora was divorced at a time when ladies were not divorced; apparently Abrams deserted her, and she was able to resume her maiden name and place in society without opprobrium. Both children resumed the Niven surname with her. She lived with Malcolm, her brother, and was known as 'Auntie". She helped to bring up Mom, and was eventually replaced by Mom at the head of her brother's table, at least according to Mom's stories. Mom took precedence as the oldest daughter of the house. I think that Auntie and Betty lived with Mom later in White River. The name of Flora's husband was a closely guarded family secret. I never knew it until I found the family Bible, where it had been entered.     Children of FLORA NIVEN and CHARLES ABRAMS are: i. BESSIE (ELIZA) CAMPBELL6 NIVEN, b. 7/22/1872; d. 2/28/1958, White River Junction, Vt. Bessie, or Betty, compiled this genealogy and passed it, along with her interest, on to me. ii. BLANCHE BUTLER NIVEN, b. 1/16/1874, Hoboken, New Jersey; d. 11/12/1891, Upper Montclair, N.J. Blanche died very young after a brief illness. Blanche and Betty were close; family stories told how during Blanche's illness, her hair got very tangled; and her head hurt. Betty combed her hair strand by strand with skill and patience.     36. DANIEL MACMARTIN5 NIVEN (THOMAS HELM4, DANIEL GOSSMAN3 MACNIVEN, DUNCAN2, MALCOLM1) was born 8/5/1849 in New York, and died 1/17/1938. He married REBECCA CONYERS 4/19/1882 in Philadelphia, daughter of WALTER CONYERS and MARGARET CORNWELL. She died 6/1930 in Upper Montclair, N.J..     Children of DANIEL NIVEN and REBECCA CONYERS are: i. NATALIE RUTTER6 NIVEN, b. 5/21/1884, Montclair, NJ. 54.ii. STANLEY LEDYARD NIVEN, b. 9/1885; d. 1/17/1938. iii. MAURICE PHILLIPS NIVEN, b. 11/11/1887; d. 11/3/1918. iv. MARGUERITE BLAUVELT NIVEN, b. 11/11/1887; d. 4/27/1937, Ralston, N.J. Maurice and Marguerite were twins. He was killed in France, Nov 3, 1918, the week before the Armistice. 3rd Battalion Headquarters, 318th Infantry, 80th Division; 1st Lieutenant. Killed at Sivry-les-Buzaney- Argonne. He was buried at Romagne sous Montfaucon. Cemetery: Meuse-Argonne Marguerite entered the Convent of St. John Baptist, an Episcopalian Convent in Ralston, N.J.     37. MALCOLM WRIGHT5 NIVEN (THOMAS HELM4, DANIEL GOSSMAN3 MACNIVEN, DUNCAN2, MALCOLM1) was born 11/26/1851 in Monticello, New York, and died 3/15/1927 in Montclair, NJ. Malcolm first married FANNIE FIELD BRIDGES 9/26/1878 in Monticello, New York, daughter of GEORGE BRIDGES and OPHELIA. She was born about 1853, and died perhaps on 2/4/1886 (from a newspaper clipping); but her death may have occurred Jan. 26, 1886, and the February notice may simply be a memorial. Malcolm then married MARY PHILENA CANEDY on 3/8/1887 in MONTCLAIR, NEW JERSEY(new york), She was the daughter of PELEG CANEDY and SARAH CAMP, and she was a good friend of Fannie Field Bridges, after whom she and Malcolm named their first daughter. Mary Philena, or Mame, was born 3/30/1852 in Springfield, IL, and died 7/19/1896 in Montclair, New Jersey. Malcolm's third wife was EVA ROMERO, whom he married 10/10/1900 in London, England. Her father, Guietano Romero, was the Mexican Minister to the Court of St. James, in London. Her uncle was the Mexican Ambassador to the United States. She died 9/15/1906 in England.     Children of MALCOLM NIVEN and FANNIE BRIDGES are: i. MALCOLM CAMPBELL6 NIVEN, b. 11/18/1882; d. 12/24/1949, Oak Ridge, N.J.; m. HENRIETTA MCCRANE BROWN; d. 6/15/1949, Oak Ridge, N.J.. ii. An infant son was born and died 1/28/1886. His mother died at his birth.     Children of MALCOLM NIVEN and MARY CANEDY are: 55.iii. ALEXANDER SOMERVILLE5 NIVEN (THOMAS HELM4, DANIEL GOSSMAN3 MACNIVEN, DUNCAN2, MALCOLM1) was born 3/4/1854 in Monticello, and died 1/19/1925 in Tacoma. He married ALICE EDLER 6/13/1877 in Hoboken, NJ. She died 7/15/1937 in Norwell, MA.     Children of ALEXANDER NIVEN and ALICE EDLER are: i. MALCOLM BLAUVELT6 NIVEN, b. 2/7/1881, Montclair; d. 7/13/1930, Tacoma, Washington; m. PAULINE PEARL WADE, 11/20/1910, Modesta, CA. ii. MARIAN EDMUNDS NIVEN, b. 4/15/1884; m. ABBOTT BRAINERD, 9/3/1908.     39. EDWARD ALEXANDER5 NIVEN (ALEXANDER HAMILTON4, DANIEL GOSSMAN3 MACNIVEN, DUNCAN2, MALCOLM1) was born 8/28/1841 in Cuylerville. He married MARY LOUISE GOUCHER 4/16/1877. She died 6/8/1902. Edward was an officer during the Civil War, and was captured, and confined in Libby Prison.     Children of EDWARD NIVEN and MARY GOUCHER are: i. MARY ISABEL6 NIVEN, b. 7/29/1878; d. 8/31/1898. ii. GRACE NIVEN, b. 11/26/1880; m. R. A. P. MEAD. iii. BRUCE CAMPBELL NIVEN, b. 7/11/1882; m. MAMIE WINT, 6/28/1905.     40. MARY ISABELLA5 NIVEN (ALEXANDER HAMILTON4, DANIEL GOSSMAN3 MACNIVEN, DUNCAN2, MALCOLM1) was born 2/28/1846, and died 8/31/1898. She married LEWIS S. GREVES 1871. Betty has Mary Isabella's birth date as February 29, 1846. However, 1846 was not a leap year. The Greves lived in Roselle, New Jersey, and Thomas Edison asked permission to try out his electric bulb for lighting a room, in their house. He astonished the audience of neighbors when the whole room was lighted by the one little bulb.     Children of MARY NIVEN and LEWIS GREVES are: i. EDITH6 GREVES, b. 1872; m. CHARLES SMITH. ii. EMMA5 NIVEN (ALEXANDER HAMILTON4, DANIEL GOSSMAN3 MACNIVEN, DUNCAN2, MALCOLM1) was born 2/7/1852, and died 4/22/1873. She married MAJOR CLOBRIDGE.     Child of EMMA NIVEN and MAJOR CLOBRIDGE is: i. EMMA6 CLOBRIDGE, m. UNKNOWN SMALL.     42. JOHN NIVEN5 SCOULLER (HELEN ISABELLA4 NIVEN, DANIEL GOSSMAN3 MACNIVEN, DUNCAN2, MALCOLM1) was born 5/1851. He married CATHERINE S. KENNEDY 10/4/1884.     Children of JOHN SCOULLER and CATHERINE KENNEDY are: i. KENNETH KENNEDY6 SCOULLER, b. 9/18/1886. ii. JOHN DUNLAP SCOULLER, b. 1/29/1888.     43. WILLIAM CURRIE5 SCOULLER (HELEN ISABELLA4 NIVEN, DANIEL GOSSMAN3 MACNIVEN, DUNCAN2, MALCOLM1) was born 5/28/1854. He married (1) EMILY CRARY BEADLE 8/22/1877. She died 3/21/1888. He married (2) SUSIE CAROLINE PETERSON 1/15/1896.     Children of WILLIAM SCOULLER and EMILY BEADLE are: i. CHARLES EDWARD6 SCOULLER, b. 5/16/1897; m. EMMA FIELD, 10/18/1905. ii.
