NIVEN

They came to America from Scotland, from the Isle of Islay. They were MacNivens; Daniel and his nephew Daniel. Once here, they dropped the "Mac" from their names and started the American Niven line. Others of the family came at different times: John, son of Neil; and Duncan, son of Archibald.

In working with this material, I started with a family tree prepared by Bessie Campbell Niven, who was born in 1872 and died in 1958. She knew many of the people and corresponded with members of the different branches for years. She also found newspaper clippings and pasted them into her work. Later, by accident, I discovered the Nevin Genealogica, and thought that perhaps it was time to put some of this material on the net in the same way I had done for another family. This, then, is a start and in no way a finished product. I have already received corrections, expansions, and new material from correspondents.
