| John Niven, born about 1795, married Isabella in Scotland and travelled with her and their family to the United States, arriving here in August, 1851. They had at least six children, three daughters and three sons. Of these children, I have been able to trace only John, born in 1843.

| It is not yet clear how -- or even if -- John is related to Malcolm MacNiven. The hypothesis with which I began was that John was the son of Neil, and thus the grandson of Malcolm, but that now seems to have been disproved by discovery of baptismal records on Islay showing John as the son of Dougall MacNiven and Mary MacKenzie.
