Descendants of James Niven

Overview

Almost nothing is known about James Niven; at best, it can be said that it is probable that he is head of this branch of the family. I do not myself know on what grounds the original decision was made; it may be partly naming conventions. At any event, he is mentioned as the founding ancestor. His date of birth is not known; but since John C. Nivens was born in 1771, a date of 1751 would be posited in accordance with the conventions. I don't think he was born AFTER that, but he might have been born quite a bit earlier.

We do not know the name of James' wife.

The only child whose name we know is John C. Nivens.

The sources for our knowledge of John C. Nivens are much more secure. Not only do we see him in the census of 1850, but we actually have a copy of his will. This, of course, is one of the most important original source documents that can be found, and it will be posted here.

Jesse Lindsey Niven, died in 1846 . His widow, Sally Jane Ticer Niven, married Daniel Wilder (3/16/1824 - 1/17/1865). They had ten children; and these children were the half brothers and sisters of Samuel L. Niven.
