Almost nothing is known about James Niven; at best, it can be said that it is probable that he is head of this branch of the family. I do not myself know on what grounds the original decision was made; it may be partly naming conventions. At any event, he is mentioned as the founding ancestor. His date of birth is not known; but since John C. Nivens was born in 1771, a date of 1751 would be posited in accordance with the conventions. I don't think he was born AFTER that, but he might have been born quite a bit earlier.

The sources for our knowledge of John C. Nivens are much more secure. Not only do we see him in the census of 1850, but we actually have a copy of his will. This, of course, is one of the most important original source documents that can be found, and it will be posted here.
