NIVEN

One of the uncertainties in this group of Nivens is the relationship between Duncan and Flora McDugal Niven, who arrived in North Carolina in 1819, and John and Isabella Niven, who arrived in North Carolina in 1851. John is thought to have been the son of Dougall and Mary MacKenzie, from the same general area of Islay, but how he is connected to the descendants of Malcolm Niven is not yet known. In working with the census documents of various family groups, I noticed something significant: Lillie G. Niven, daughter of John and Rachael Niven, granddaughter to John and Isabella Niven who emigrated from Scotland, lived with Clayton Niven, son of Duncan and Sarah Redfearn Niven, grandson of Duncan and Flora McDougal Niven, and was listed as "sister in law." The categories on the census being limited, I thought that this might be used instead of "cousin" or something similar, and that this might be some indication that the line of John and Isabella was actually related to the line of Duncan and Flora. I decided to track Lillie more carefully and see what I could find out.

The result of this tracking did prove a relationship, although not the one I had expected. Carlton's wife was named Isabella F., but Isabella's last name was not given on the census records. From the analysis, it is now clear that Clayton married Isabella F. Niven, the daughter of John and Isabella and sister of Lillie and MacKenzie. Thus in 1910, Carlton, Isabella and their children are joined by Mackenzie, Carlton's brother in law. And since Lillie was Isabella's sister, when she joins the family in 1920, she is sister in law.

In 1900, Carlton is still in White Store with his brother and mother, while Lillie, Daisy, and Isabella are in Morven with their parents. White Store and Morven are not far apart; the road seems to go north through Wadesboro, and then south again.

Carlton married Isabelle Niven about 1906, and moved to Morven. In 1910, his household contains himself and his wife, three children, and his brother in law McKenzie Niven, Isabella's brother. Only a couple of houses away, Lillie is living with another sister's family. Daisy Gertrude married Clyde C. Bowman about the same time and has two children. Lillie is listed as sister in law to Clyde.

McKenzie is listed in the census of 1920, still single. He does not seem to be in the census of 1930. Clyde Bowman and his entire family seem to disappear after 1910. Repeated searches have not found them.
