Greenwood Cemetery

Early Veterans
 of Greenwood Cemetery,
including
Revolutionary War, Civil War and
Spanish American War

Compiled by
Diane Nichols, Greenwood Cemetery Historian
(150atf@sals-nospam-giver.com)

This was a project started in 1982, intending to list Civil War Veterans.  Entries that were labeled as soldiers in the original internment book were listed. The list was further extended after consulting with the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War.  A reading of tombstones increased the list.  At the time of the tombstone readings, family member’s tombstones were also read.  Not all compilations agree on the soldiers who are buried here.

SUV – A list for Greenwood Cemetery from the Sons of the Union Veterans, thanks to  David Orr.  Discrepancies are found between the dates found in the SUV list and records at the cemetery.  Many soldiers were transferred or re-enlisted in other regiments near the end of the war.  Please consult the National Archives for further information.

Custer Post list – This includes information taken from a list of Civil War solders buried in Greenwood Cemetery printed on May 30, 1921 and donated to Greenwood by the General George A. Custer Post No. 38 in Sharpsburg, PA.

A few other sources were consulted when the dates and regiment of the veteran was in question or missing.
